Avoiding Fees
Monthly Fees
They offer a free checking account with no monthly fees to worry about. The savings account and CD has no monthly fees to worry about as long as you have a balance of $200+
Early Account Termination Fee
If the account is closed within three months you have to pay a $26 fee, you also forfeit the bonus.
Our Verdict
Previously they offered a $125 checking & $75 savings bonus. I think this new bonus is better as no direct deposit is required (unless you want to do the CD bonus). They have a 30 day CD which should qualify you for that bonus, but it only earns 0.05% and means you need to do a direct deposit as well. That being said I think all three bonuses are worth doing, in particular the checking & savings bonus. The CD bonus is a bit more line ball as you need to tie up $20,000 for 30 days and then do the direct deposit as well. I’ll be adding all three of these to our list of the best checking account bonuses.

Has anyone received the checking bonus for performing the 10 debit card transactions yet? I fulfilled all the requirements, waited 60 days from meeting requirements, and still haven’t received the bonus. I have been contacting by branch at least once a week and they keep telling me they will look into it. Should I submit a CFPB complaint at this point?
I had to contact my local branch 3 or 4 times before it posted. Just keep trying and get the name of the person you speak with each time.
William Charles, you have the following under “Monthly Fees”. However, the savings account requires a $200 balance to avoid a fee.
“They offer a free checking account with no monthly fees to worry about. The savings account and CD has no monthly fees to worry about”
Updated, thanks
Offer page isn’t showing any bonus for CD now.
Looks like they pulled the CD bonus offer earlier than scheduled.
DP: Opened Savings and Checking end of Feb. 2020
Deposit $5,200 savings and set up true work DD although it was partial paycheck (just over $100).
Savings bonus posted first week of April 2020.
Withdrew $5000 from Savings a few days later and left a $200 balance to keep fee free.
Checking bonus posted third week of April 2020.
Will close both soon.
*NOTE: You must keep these accounts open for 90 days to avoid early closing fee of $26
I recently went through CFPB process with this bank (denied bonus) for their last promotion. Bank argued that more than one DD was needed for the bonus. Even though the language specified ‘establish a DD in 45 days’ they were sticking to the ‘recurring’ wording to deny paying out the bonus. Make sure to do more than one DD within the time period!
In NJ, the drive-thru was open for all transactions.
Funny you say that because I opened my checking account with them back in January and noticed I still haven’t gotten my $100 bonus. Called the branch and they stated I did everything correct and sent an inquiry to the back office to see why the bonus hasnt posted. Hopefully they resolve this with in the next 10 days or I might need to file a CFPB as well. Any progress on your case ?
James, did you ever get the bonus? Did you have to file a CFPB in order to get it? I’m in the same boat as you as I opened up my account in late January and haven’t received my checking bonus either. I called them and they said to give them a few weeks more to process the bonus but that was a week and a half ago. I’m probably going to file a CFPB soon.
Nope. Still haven’t gotten the bonus. I’m giving them till Wednesday before I file a CFPB. I’m 2 minutes from a branch so maybe I’ll stop by and ask to what’s taking so long. So glad I didn’t do the savings/cd bonus with them. Terrible bank
@James, did you end up getting the bonus yet? Did you file a CFPB complaint? I filed one and am waiting to hear back.
I did end up getting the bonus after making numerous calls and speaking with the bank manager. Will Close the account in a couple weeks with a smile on my face.
James what did they tell you when you called the branch to ask about the bonus? I have the same situation and my branch just keeps saying they will look into it.
This one is back. Available through April 30, 2020 (Difference: now requires 10 debit swipes)
Trustco Bank $200 Checking / Savings Bonus
Trustco Bank now has a $200 bonus offer when you open a new checking or savings account.
What you’ll get: $200 Bonus
Eligible account: Checking and Savings
Credit inquiry: Soft Pull
Where it’s available: FL, MA, NJ, NY & VT
How to earn it:
Open a checking and savings account with direct deposit
When you’ll receive it: All bonuses will be paid within 60 calendar days of verification that the requirements have been satisfied for each offer.
Have you been able to open this considering that can’t go into banks?
I do wonder if you could open it over the phone given the current situation with banks being closed or doing drive up only. Probably worth trying.
Yes, the branch is open. In FL, take a mask with you.
I called customer service to see if given the circumstances, they could open an account over the phone, and was told no. Accounts can only be opened in person in a branch. Apparently some branches are still open.
Right on time unlike some other banks who don’t remove their expired promotion pages.

Anyone from out of town been able to open by going into a branch? Or is it residency restricted?
