[Expired] Fuel Rewards Network: Earn 15¢/Gallon with Grocery Store Purchases

Update 07/01/18: Deal has expired, view more Fuel Rewards deals here.

Update 04/18/18: Ok it’s back for real this time. Thanks to reader George

Update: I’m not very smart, I thought the offer was back but only the initial linking offer is.

Update 04/04/18: This has been extended again until June 20th, 2018.

Update 01/09/18: This has been extended until March 31st, 2018.

The Offer

Direct Link

Fuel Rewards network is Shell’s loyalty program (one of many gas programs). You can earn fuel rewards by using their shopping portal, purchasing select items at Shell stations, and by dining with their card-link program.

They’ve now added another way to earn which clearly outshines the other methods: grocery shopping.

  • Earn 15¢/gallon off your Shell gas fillup with each $100 in grocery store spend at participating stores

Giant Foods and Stop&Shop are FRN partners and are eligible for this 15¢ promo. There seem to be many other groceries affiliated with FRN as well – check the Location Search here (select Shop).

The Fine Print

  • Must pay for the groceries with a linked Mastercard; be sure to link the Mastercard before using it at the grocery store
  • Expires June 30th, 2018
  • Rewards will be added to your account in 5-7 business days
  • Available in select markets only

Final Thoughts

FRN used to be pretty much useless for me since there wasn’t any easy way to earn and rewards aren’t too useful for me being that Shell is more expensive. Both of those have now changed:

The only bummer for me is that I’d typically use my Amex Blue Cash card at the grocery store, and this promo is only for Mastercards. Best cards for groceries can be found here.

If you’re new to Fuel Rewards Network, here’s my referral link. On a related note, SD reports you can get 25¢/gallon by linking your Giant/SS with FRN if you haven’t done so already. Personally, I couldn’t get it to work.

Right now there’s a quadruple stack at Giant/SS: link FRN with Giant/SS and get 25¢, get 15¢ per $100 with Mastercard, double fuel points on VGC at Giant/SS,  10x points with a Sears Mastercard at the grocery.

The offer page says 3c/$100 spend. Looks like it is almost dead

They also don’t seem to list any grocery stores as participating anymore — all groceries in Austin used to show up on their map (from local corner groceries to WFM and Randalls), but now it’s all empty. Checked Denver and Phoenix as well, which weren’t participating before, IIRC, and still aren’t now.

It does seem like the T&C currently mentions that you can even link a prepaid card (possibly to the exclusion of gift cards?!) — not sure if that’s new — but if no stores are participating, then it’s not exactly sure what’s the point of the programme is.

Anyone actually seeing rewards hit their account? None of my purchases have worked since March 30.

4/30 – spent $1,000 on linked MC at S&S. The $.15/gal has still yet to post. Called customer service; was told to call back after 7 business days.

None of my purchases are working either. I checked their map for participating locations and don’t see any grocery stores listed at all.

I was informed by a Fuel Rewards customer service rep today that as of April 1st most of the grocers have dropped out of the program. She read the remaining merchants list to me but I don’t recall the names because mine weren’t on there (Meijer, IGA, and Spartan Stores). She insisted there was a list available on their website somewhere other than just the map search, but damned if I can find it.

Makes no sense if you have the Chase Freedom card that earn 5% (unless it’s also a Master Card)

I assume your speaking of using Chase Pay 5%, because CF Gas category 5% was last quarter. Not everyone has a CF. Many do, I will give you that. But you should be able to stack this when you pay that way, using FR and Chase Pay, in theory.

But also, not all Shell stations accept Chase Pay. I tried twice to use Chase Pay at Shell – first gas station didn’t take it (not found in app), and the cashier had no way to scan the QR code when I went inside. The 2nd station, I couldn’t get it to work. Kept telling me the pump was in use. Plus, Chase Pay was embarrassingly slow on my phone to the point I felt like a moron for holding the pump hostage for so long. If someone was behind me I would have felt like the old lady that writes a check for a loaf of bread in the cash only lane at the supermarket. I drove off pissed and wished I could have gotten my 15 minutes back I spent screwing around with it, without even buying gas.

But, since it’s “complain about crap Wednesday”, I’ll mention that I am dissatisfied that none of the area grocery stores are Shell FR participants. So, my groceries go unrewarded, beyond the BCP 6% that’s really only 4% after AF. Sad….

5% on groceries with chase freedom is what you are giving up by purchasing groceries with your master card in order to get 15c off per gallon. So $100 groceries with chase gets you $5, but $3 max off gas with this promo.

OK. I see now. So, pay for your groceries with Chase Freedom VISA and get 5% off… and pay with Chase Pay (good luck to anyone) and get 5% off (11-20 cents per gallon US currently) again. Yeah… not all deals work out for everyone.

This makes a lot of sense. You get the fuel credits on gift cards too.

I buy two at a time. $500 + 5.95 fee = $1011.90. I get 2% back on the DoubleCash card ($20.24), so I make $8.34 just buying the cards. Then I get 75 cents/gallon per gift card, or $1.50 for both. That saves me $30 for every 20 gallons.

I buy two cards every time I’m at the grocery store and cash them in when I get $5 or $6k, put the money into my checking and pay off the cards.

I’m glad this is back because I’m down to $7 and change per gallon in savings and I buy a lot of gas ($10-20,000/year depending on prices). My last 3 fill ups were 1 cent/gallon, saving me about $60 each time.

I figure this promo will save me at least $1000 in gas over the next couple of months.

https://gph.is/2mQTInP Just change “Circle K” to “Shell station”.

Sounds like Curmudgeon should just get the Shell truck to deliver to the house. I am just to lazy too MS like that. My luck I would get robbed leaving the store, or some other stupid crap would happen.

I wish they’d deliver. 😀 I’m tempted to hire an intern to just drive back and forth between the grocery store and WalMart to max out the fuel savings.

I couldn’t get my giant card to link either. I’m in the original Giant PA area and our card only has 11 digits. It keeps asking for 12 on the FRN site. We’ll see what happens.

You need to link (register) your MasterCards in the Shell Fuel Rewards website or in the app before making these purchases.

On my cell phone Shell rewards app, in addition to groceries, I see the same 15 cents per $100 spend for hardware like Ace, Lowes, Menards and Home Depot (should be stackable with Citi Dividend Rewards), plant nurseries, paint stores and some other construction related businesses. All are activated in the app without my having to activate any of them.

I’m not seeing this in my account. I am seeing 5 cents/gallon per $100 spent at home & garden stores, but that’s not very exciting.

I hope it does show up soon because I’m down to $8/gallon and I’m enjoying buying diesel at 1.9 cents/gallon. 🙂

This Offer is only for those who link their MasterCard Card for the first-time.
