It might even be worth it to simply buy the pro membership alone. It costs $15 and you get at least $60 worth of free stuff each year so the effective fee is +$45

This is referring to using your $5 monthly pro reward to purchase a $5 gift card to another shop (such as Nintendo e-shop). Gamestop’s system doesn’t let you checkout without a transaction greater than $0, so you have to add a filler item, such as a .99 digital game download code. This essentially lets you get a $5 gift card for $1.
If anyone is looking for a filler item, I’d recommend a $1 donation to make a wish.
FYI, except for a brief period in early January this year, this could always be done in store using the monthly $5 Pro Reward certificate.
Yup! I’ve always done this. In store. Every month for almost a couple years now. I thought this was new or different but appears to be the same thing.
can someone please explain how to activate and redeem this offer? I looked under rewards but only see rewards I can buy with points.. I have an active pro subscription.. i don’t see anywhere for a free $5 Nintendo eshop code

Last month they announced that pro rewards won’t work for gift cards anymore, did they change their minds? Or is this limited time?

Well great they went back on it. Membership is worthless otherwise and I had turned off auto renewals when they first announced the change last month
Not completely useless as it has been great to have first dibs on the console bundle drops for a PS5 and XBOX Series X. I’m happy with the membership.
