GameStop To Purchase 3rd Party Gift Cards In Store

GameStop & CardPool have a deal that is similar to the previous Walmart & CardPool deal (which is now dead), where consumers can exchange their 3rd party gift cards for GameStop giftcards online. They’ve now announced that consumers will now be able to sell their 3rd party gift cards in store as well as online.

Unfortunately you will not be able to receive cash, instead you’ll receive in store GameStop credit (you’ll be given a GameStop gift card which is loaded with funds). Jon Haes, senior director, pre-owned merchandising at GameStop, had this to say:

We’re excited about our growing partnership with Cardpool. This is the logical ‘next step’ in revolutionizing the way major retailers offer prepaid gifting exchange while providing customers even more ways to access immediate value both in their retail stores and online.

It’s unclear if consumers will receive the same rates in store as they do online, or if these rates will be lower. GameStop gift cards can be resold for around 83% of their facevalue according to GiftCardGranny so the rates they are offering would need to be considerably higher than their cash rates to make up for this difference.

Very poor rate.. I don’t think is as exciting as Walmart-Cardcash.

The online rates are 5% worse that what cardpool.com offers, and you’re not even getting cash.
Assuming in-store rates are identical or worse, why bother?

With Walmart the rates were better than cash!

One very important note is that Game Stop is one of the few stores that give literally zero cares about buying gift cards using their Game Stop gift cards. This, this could be an interesting opportunity.
