Update 2: Readers have reported succesfully getting the promo gift card so it looks like it’s legitimately. Also looks like gift card purchases will work if you purchase at least $20 in non gift card items.
Update: Some concerns this is not a valid promotion due to it not being on the Walmart website. The direct link doesn’t ask you for any personal information, but please be careful.
The Offer
- Spend $100 or more at a Walmart store with an Amex card using Walmart Pay and get a $20 Walmart e-gift card
The Fine Print
- Offer expires 12/31
- In-store only
- The $20 Walmart eGift card will be loaded into your Walmart Pay account after you complete your qualifying purchase
Our Verdict
I wouldn’t go to Walmart for this, but if I’m at a Walmart store I’ll download the app and buy a Walmart gift card to bring my total over $100 and get the promo. Walmart also carries many third-party gift cards, and all these should trigger the promo offer.

Looks like it’s dead.
3 hours ago, bought $100 walmart gc plus $1.1 bananas by self checkout, almost got the $20 Walmart gc instantly.
same here just did today already received $20. Bought $100 walmart gift card and box of cereal.
Thanks, odd that the webpage isn’t working anymore.
My wife tried it on her phone with a different Walmart Pay account, but no go (she also used a mix of merchandise and a gift card). The manager even came over and voided out the sale and started from scratch again, but the message on the card reader kept going to something like “use different payment method”, then the QR code would disappear and the standard “swipe card now” message would appear.
We are on the same Amex account, but have different account numbers. I wonder if that has something to do with it? I keep trying to find the terms but links lead to nowhere. The only term I have read is “limit one per Walmart Pay account”. At least we got ONE of the gift cards between us.
I just bought $44 worth of merchandise, and had the cashier put $60 on a new Walmart gift card, paid with Walmart Pay (Amex), and the $20 Walmart gift card credit showed up instantly in my Walmart Pay account.
For those that have failed to get the $20 credit, maybe it will work if you mix some merchandise into the $100 total? Or maybe it was because I bought a Walmart gift card instead of one for another merchant? Anyway, you might try that combo, and have the merchandise rung up before adding the card to the total.
Good to know thanks! Will have to give that a try rather than just doing a gift card.
I asked Walmart employees and they said all giftcards in W had been hard coded as cash and debit card ONLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL, you were BSed by that WM.
Tried buying a $100 Walmart gift card via Walmart Pay using Amex card and it wouldn’t process. Not sure if it was a Walmart Pay error or if it’s set up so you can’t buy a gift card. Double checked and all card info was correct in app so don’t think it was user error.
I can confirm what Daniel said. Also tried to buy a Walmart gift card via Walmart Pay and the transaction didn’t come through.
I saw on another day at a WMNM, a guy with kids tried to use WM Pay for regular grocery items. The transaction didn’t go through. He tried the WM Pay twice. The cashier was willing to give more tries, but the waiting lane was getting long, he used a chip card. I think it was before this promo.

can you use this more than once if you have lots of amex cards?
It’s probably tied to the Walmart Pay account. Maybe if you have more than one phone, you can download the app on each one using a separate Walmart account, and get the credit multiple times.
Do we need to register to be able to use this offer or it is a public offer? Also, will walmart GC qualify?
Thanks
Can You use a prepaid Bluebird American Express debit card?
I dunno about gift cards. Last time I did a Walmart Pay offer with Discover, Discover claimed that gift cards didn’t count and that they could see that was what was purchased. YMMV.
