The Offer

Direct Link to offer (Chase login required)

Chase is offering the following special on the Freedom cards:

  • Earn 5% cash back on up to $2,500 in total hotel purchases made through Chase Ultimate Rewards using your Chase Freedom/Freedom Unlimited card during March.

This is for 5% total, so it’s 3.5% + 1.5% on the Freedom Unlimited, and 4% + 1% on the Freedom.

The Fine Print

  • During the promotional period of March 1 to March 31, 2020 11:59 p.m. E.T., earn an extra 3.5% cash back on up to $2,500 in hotel purchases made through Chase Ultimate Rewards® using your Chase Freedom Unlimited card.
  • The bonus cash back earned is in addition to the 1.5% cash back you earn on all purchases for a total of 5% cash back, which means you can earn up to $125 total cash back ($37.50 cash back plus your $87.50 bonus cash back).
  • Bonus cash back will post to your account within a week of the transaction posting, and will appear on your monthly credit card billing statement and be available for use within 1-2 billing cycles.
  • To qualify for this promotional offer, account must be open and not in default at the time of fulfillment. This promotional offer is non-transferable. For more information about your rewards program, see your Rewards Program Agreement.

Our Verdict

I only have the Freedom card, and it’s showing me terms for the Freedom Unlimited which is odd. They’ve run this offer multiple times before, though previously it was for 10x and now it’s down to 5x. 🙁 In previous years it showed on Sapphire cards too; I’m not entirely sure which cards are eligible, but I’d guess/assume that if it shows in the login on a certain card it should work on that card. Looks like the offer is public, but again I’m not 100% sure.

  • You need to book the travel now in March in order to take advantage of this offer, but you can book out for hotel stays at later dates.
  • You need to pay cash, it won’t work if you pay with your Ultimate Rewards points.
  • No registration required.
  • If you have Freedom and Freedom Unlimited, you should probably be able to book $2,500 with each card separately and get the bonus twice.

The fact that you need to use the Chase Ultimate Rewards booking portal is obviously a downside, and a lot of people will find other stacks elsewhere, but some may find it useful.

Can you split points and charge to a freedom card and get this? I’d like to still have my travel insurance on the reserve covering any hotel bookings.

This offer seems not valid on Chase Freedom card? I tried but only x1 points…

So you have to pay deposit in advance to get the bonus points? I sounds like you can book a hotel in December and cancel in November 🙂

I currently have the Freedom Unlimited 3% UR promo. Does this mean I get 3+3.5%=6.5%?

No shopping portal. No hotel points. No discounts. Not worth it.

Do you still get hotel loyalty points and perks if you book through Chase portal?

As I recall, you do not and this is a downside of this promotion.

Chuck should make this clear above.

Is it in form of UR or SC?

Considering the ongoing coronavirus situation, I feel like people may wanna cancel unnecessary trips. As someone lives in the Seattle region, I feel really nervous about the near future, as somehow I don’t see much effort from the authority yet.

Still, nice deal for those in need, and DoC gj as always.

Just live your life. You have been exposed to it for months with SeaTac nearby and you’re not dead yet.

In one way you’re right, but still, if it’s possible to avoid thousands of dollars to be spent on medicine, I would definitely try my best. All the cards’ bonuses I’ve obtained so far may not even offset the medical cost.

And more importantly, this thing is not that fatal IF treated correctly. As Seattle has reported 2 deaths, still a lot of people seem to feel this as another flu, which isn’t.

In some ways, the system is yet prepared for this, and personally I believe our health is the last thing you would ever wanna risk about.

I admit this whole thing sounds exaggerating, but there’s nothing wrong about staying cautious. Just personal thoughts.

And for god’s sake, hope this thing would get controlled soon enough and all people in the forum stay healthy.

For people who don’t have other health risk conditions, but who work, one of the bigger risks is not dying or even being badly sick, but just losing time from work (either pay or PTO) if you’re required to “quarantine”. If that’s along with everyone else at your work, there was no avoiding it, but if that’s only you because of travel, that’s a different analysis. (Plus the costs of “quarantining” itself.)

Totally agreed……. and that’s a problem of evaluating which side is more important. It’s so hard to say at this time, but just hope when needed we won’t be too late for the change.

Just like I said in the comment above, proceed with caution my friends, even for the sake of credit card bonuses to come LOL

And thx for your point of view, good opinion

Seattle is ground zero, so there’s no avoiding it and no use sulking about it. you can battle it fiercely though

250,000 people have died of pneumonia the past month, worldwide.

2500 people have passed away due to respiratory illness COVID-19 during that same time, worldwide. Many of whom had pre-existing med conditions and poor access to medical care.

Can we all take a step back from media hysteria, sensationalism and borderline xenophobia? My sister and her family live in Seattle, they seem fine. They also vaccinate their kids and have kept them in school too. They have decided not to move to a rural bunker to wait things out.

Sorry, never intended to start a fight or something, just wanna remind all of us to stay alert. Maybe I’ve been overexpressing myself somehow, apologies if any bad impressions caused.

I was born somewhere very close to Shanghai, so may be a little more sensitive than needed. Thank you for pointing out.

It’s understanding that makes us strong, and that shall never change. Love you all, and I hope you all well.

Such a ridiculous comparison I don’t know where to even start. Most critically, the mortality rate of pneumonia is, according to the CDC, 0.00015% (15.1 people per 100K), whereas the mortality rate of COVID-19 is approx .034% (3,400 people per 100K). So roughly 200x more deadly.

Second, the transmissibility of COVID-19 appears to be much higher than pneumonia (which, by the way, can oftentimes be dealt with using anti-biotics, whereas COVID-19 cannot).

The bottom line is that just because the media is hysterical does not mean there is not anything to be concerned about.

We don’t really know the mortality rate of COVID-19. Testing has been extremely inefficient. The US is just now getting proper testing techniques. There are probably MANY more people infected than known, which would bring that mortality rate way down.
