The Chase Sapphire Preferred is one of my favorite cards, mostly due to it’s flexibility. I love to redeem my points for cash, as all my travel is paid for by work. This card gives you $400 when redeeming for cash/statement credit and even more value when transferring to one of Chase’s transfer partners.

One of the downsides of this card is that it requires you to spend $3,000 within three months to hit the 40,000 point sign up bonuses. For most people this shouldn’t be an issue (you can hit it with no fees just by sending money to a trusted friend through amazon payments). But if you apply for the Chase Sapphire Preferred at a Chase branch, the minimum spend requirement is $2,000 – instead of the usual $3,000.

Keep in mind the bonus sometimes goes up to 50,000 points.

Chase regularly runs promotions (usually once per year, sometimes more often) where the sign up bonus is increased to 50,000 points. It might be worth waiting for one of these offers to come around before applying, as that’s another $100 in statement credit/cash.
