Our Verdict
[Update 2: I’ve now received my bonus, relatively hassle free but I used a real employer direct deposit. Others have reported that some ACH transfers have also triggered the bonus. As always, click here for updated data points]
Update: Because this is a soft pull, I’ll be taking advantage of this offer. I’m going to go for the select checking product. I’ll fund the account with $1,000 from my American Express Fidelity card to earn an extra $20 and then park another $4,000 in there for six months to avoid any monthly fees. I’ll also do direct deposits of $300 from my employer to trigger the bonus.].
At the moment not much is known about this deal. For example, is it a hard credit pull or only a chex inquiry? What other methods count as a direct deposit? On the bright side there doesn’t seem to be any geographical limit on who can apply for a checking account with BMO Harris.
For the moment I’m going to wait to see if this is a hard pull, if it isn’t then I’ll likely open the Select Checking account and park $5,000 in there for six months (to waive the monthly fee). I’ll need to do at least three direct deposits of $300 or more (possibly a fourth as it can take 120 days for the bonus to appear) to trigger the bonus.
I’ll be forgoing about $25 in interest that I could’ve earned if I had the money parked in a high interest bearing checking account (the highest of which is currently at about 1% compared to the 0.050% I’ll receive with BMO Harris)
What If You Don’t Have $5,000 Spare?
Your best option will be to go for Everyday Checking account and receive a direct deposit of $500 per month to make the account fee free and trigger the bonus.
Hat tip to whoooooooooooooosh from /r/churning
I was wondering the the $300 could be over the course of a month? I get several paychecks throughout the month of less than $300, would this qualify? I am just concerned I am not going to get my promotion because of this fact.
Just funded my account and have set up the direct deposit with my employer.
I was just able to get a response from a rep over chat. Sadly it does not count.
I was thinking to do an ACH push from Vanguard (Simliar to Schwab), but I could not find anything on this working or not.
I guess I need to explore different ACH deposit methods that work with BMO Harris since my account is now open.
I made DD through paypal and on the on-line account it shows ACH deposits, but I am having trouble getting the bonus bucks, they tell me there is a Promo Marketing Co separate from BMO Harris that takes care of that zinc all they can do is E-Mail then to check up on my bonus, they say they cannot call them by phone, I have called BMO Harris about this 5 Times even talked to the folks at the local branch…Good luck, and I will keep after them because I did all the qualifying ACH Deposits, I even asked for the Promo. Co E-mail so I could send one off directly, but did not get that today.
Were you ever able to receive your promo?

Thanks, will update it and direct deposit information over the weekend.

If you actually try to sign up and use Winterckg1, it doesn’t work.
However, if you go to this link and use Campaign04, it does.

Looks like the offer was extended to 9/30/14!!!! That should be plenty of time for people to test out new methods to trigger DD and start receiving bonuses!
Nice work, Mario. I’ve updated the post to reflect the new date.
William,
How many direct deposits of $300 are required? And when must the first one be received?
Until the “payment date” which is 120 days after you opened the account, so 4 months starting from the first month.
Did a little digging…http://slickdeals.net/f/6810088-get-up-to-200-from-bmo-harris-direct-deposit-required?page=3
Was that supposed to say that paypal “does” work? That is what this thread seems to be says. Don’t mean to sound like a jerk, I am just wanting to have a clear answer before opening another account.
By the way, I just stumbled on your blog through Travels with Grant, I love it! I subscribed immediately. Check it all the time. 🙂 Thanks for putting such good info together.
Hi Mario,
We aren’t sure what does and doesn’t count as direct deposit yet as nobody has received their bonus. As soon as people start receiving their bonus we will update that page (and this one). I’d go for an employer payment if you want to sign up now, I doubt we will get confirmation before the May 5th deadline.
Glad to hear you like the blog, make sure you’re on the newsletter as well. We will be sending out a free eBook on bank account bonuses in the next couple of days.
Okay. Thank you anyways. Maybe ill just pull the trigger and wait to see. Not sure.
I thought I subscribed a few days ago, but I don’t seem to be receiving emails about new posts.
Is there any way to trigger the direct deposit other than one from an employer?
Yes, look here: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/knowledge-base/list-methods-banks-count-direct-deposits/#BMO_Harris
All it says is that paypal doesn’t work…
Sorry, but all it says is that paypal doesn’t work… I was hoping for something more conclusive before signing away my money.
