The Offer
Stop&Shop, Giant, Martin’s (page 5)
- Giant/Stopandshop/Martin’s has an offer for October 30 – November 5: Get 2x fuel points on the purchase Mastercard gift cards.
Gift cards generally don’t earn fuel points at all at Giant/S&S/Martin’s, but occasionally they release offers like this to get points on gift card purchases.
Gas Points Details
Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon (max $1.50 discount in most). Points can be used at partner Shell locations.
Points are now usable on groceries as well, with a value of 100 points equaling a $1 discount.
- You have 30 days to select whether you want to use the points on gas or groceries, then 30 days to actually use them.
- See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
- Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.
Our Verdict
Aside from the Mastercard deal, there’s also a deal for 10x on Happy, Boscov, and Spa gift cards. Fuel points can be used to discount groceries as well, making these deals more widely useful. Use a card that earns a bonus at the grocery.
Note: many SS/Giant stores have implemented a $2,000 limit in gift card purchases each day (previously the limit was $5,000). They also require putting it all on a single card.
Hat tip to reader DDG
The new “Holiday’s Favorite” card earned 10x today. I didn’t realize until after that it doesn’t say “Happy” on it, so fortunately it still triggered the 10x Happy bonus anyways. This particular one can be redeemed online for a variety of electronic gift cards (including Lowe’s). It’s a solid deal to essentially get a 20-25% on Lowe’s purchases (if you have a decent size gas tank + CC rewards).
Starting later this week for Stop & Shop (11/6-11/26) is buy $150 in gift cards and get $25 off your next purchase (coupon expires 12/2). It shows a dozen images (including Apple & Home Depot) but SHOULD include all 3rd party GCs as the terms just mention an exclusion of Visa, Mastercard, reloadable, and S&S GCs. Unfortunately, this is a downgrade from last year’s November promotion that was buy $100 in gift cards and get $20 off next purchase.
This is one of my favorite easy deals. It’s so easy to get outsized value from it. I’d like to encourage you to keep posting these!
Same here, but I usually wait for VGC. I can max out gas pts use so one ‘shopping’ trip (4 x 500 VGCs) usually gets me $120 in gas savings + 6k TY pts, so conservatively ~$200 in value for $25 in fees.
When you calculate the value of such a deal, don’t forget you would get points if you spend the 2K directly, too!
In my case for instance, I would get 4K TY for 2K spend on a CIti DC vs 6K when buying gift cards and using those. So I’d see it as a ~$150 deal, but of cause, that’s nice, too.
I have been doing those a couple of times, too. Chase just added 5x miles for grocery to my United card, I might get gift cards with that card …
I didn’t get your point. This is MS, I’d either do this deal and get the points or do nothing, not spend anything, and not get the points. It’s not like I would’ve gotten $2k of spend if I didn’t jump on this deal.
This is really depressing as the last 2 years they had a $10 digital coupon on a $50 happy card in the first week of November and it seems doubtful they will have it together with the 10 x gas points.
Happy Gift Cards are Depressed Gift Cards now anyways. No Home Depot = sad guy. My Lowe’s only rings up gift cards at the cash register (not self checkout) and they always match name/ID, and my BBB doesn’t have AGC
They definitely don’t require it all being on one card. I believe their paper instructions actually says it has to be the same payment method. I usually do $1011.90 on one card and $1011.90 on another card. If you try to do 4×500 for $2023.80 on one card it doesn’t actually work because the total is over $2000.
You can go over $2k in one transaction. But they usually fill out an internal form/log (DL no SSN)
Last time I did the two transactions before me on the form/log were each $5000 ($500×10).
I am in DC/Md/Va
I know there is a paper binder but do you know anything about buying only ONE $500 VGC/MGC and a manager keying in, taking/looking at your ID/CC and “typing a whole bunch of crap” at the cash register and then being prompted to enter your phone number (not rewards related)?
Weird. I’m in MA and just bring them to customer service. I’ve only tried 500×4 once and they said they couldn’t proceed on their register. Split it and it’s been fine. They’ve compared my license and cards before as well but no log.
YMMV. Also in MA, one store near me sometimes logs $2k purchases, other one almost never does.
Most recently, Giant (PA) tried telling me that all choice points promotions (including the gift card promos) required a $25 shopping trip spend. I’m not sure if they’re interpreting this wrong but… something to consider.
I use Giant in DC/VA/MD. This would be incorrect information here but maybe PA is different. Just nod and continue with the transaction.
Well the issue is that the register frequently prints the receipt with 0 points and then for the employee to manually add the points, they fall back on the ad that shows a $25 minimum purchase. Luckily I had just bought about $30 of stuff a few minutes prior and he accepted my separate receipt.
Trevor FYI, Giant in DC/VA/MD always prints 0 points on the receipt for me and then the points appear in my account about half an hour later.
Thanks for posting this. I didn’t realize that was in the ad. This is a new thing, right?
I was told the same at Stop and Shop in MA. I got the impression there was something in their training about it. I had to explain that the gc promos differ from the grocery promos and show the disbelieving employee my points balance the next day. She’s a good one and genuinely appreciated learning the way it works.
