Gift cards generally don’t earn fuel points at all at Giant/S&S, but they’ll occasionally release offers like this to get points for gift card purchases.

The Fine Print

  • Valid 12/16 through 12/22 [starts Friday, 12/16]
  • Must use store card to get and use points
  • Be sure to double check that your local store is running this offer before buying

Gas Points Details

Giant/S&S revised their fuel points program on August 9, 2016. Here are the updated details:

Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon.

  • Max discount in some areas is $1.50. In other areas, there might not be any max.
  • You have 30 days to use the points. The day of purchase is Day #1.
  • Points can only be used at partner Shell stations. You can redeem the points in a different area from where you got the points, but only if that Shell station is a partner. Check out the gas locator for Stop & Shop and for Giant for exact listings of which Shell stations are included.
  • See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
  • Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.
  • Pro tip: Use a Shell gift card and you’ll usually get the cash price; it’s especially worthwhile to get the lower cash price when using fuel points.

Our Verdict

For each tank of gas you’ll need over the next month, buy $750 of Mastercard gift cards to get $1.50 off the tank. I’ll probably do $3,000 to get four tanks, then maybe another $1,500 at the end of the week to add an extra week of cheap gas.

I’m loving the influx of fuel points deals in the Northeast. My grocery cards weren’t getting much action when Giant/S&S went cash-only for prepaids, but now they began accepting credit cards again and there have been quite a few fuel points deals of late.

Just a data point as mentioned on flyertalk, points did not post for me. Supposedly can take up to 24 hours.
Also that thread says that yes for PO. I have yet to try myself, but will!

Points did not post for me either, I’ve waited 3+ days so far and still nothing. I tried calling the corporate number listed on the flyertalk thread but the CSR insisted that only the store can make the adjustments, but he assured me that they would be able to take care of it for me. Such a hassle… nothing ever works properly at Stop & Shop, and most of their cashiers don’t have a clue what’s going on… some cashiers tell me that I can only purchase Visa/Mastercard gift cards at the customer service counter, then I go to the customer service counter and they claim their scanner is broken and insist that it can be done at the register… just needs a manager override. Of course the gas points still don’t post properly… I guess I’ll be making another trip back to S&S later today to get this sorted out. Going to stick with VGC’s only from now on, these Mastercards are such a hassle and are even harder to unload… /endrant

There are two Giant chains – Giant of Maryland and Giant Food Stores (based in Central PA) – and while they typically run the same promotions in terms of gift cards, there gas policies are slightly different.

You list the Giant of Maryland policies above but Giant Food Stores does not have a max discount per gallon and Gas points are valid until the last day of the following month in which they were received. Example: points received in July expire August 31. https://giantfoodstores.com/faqs/#gas
