Our Verdict
I’m pretty sure this is available nationwide and you need to be a military/ex military member to be eligible, as least that’s what I was able to find during the sign up process (I didn’t actually sign up as I’m not eligible). There are no requirements or monthly fees for this bonus, so it seems like an easy $100 if it’s a soft pull. If anybody opens an account then let us know your experiences in the comments below.

- Update 7/27/18: The bank reached out to inform us that there is a hard pull and there is a direct deposit requirement. Updated below.
It seems that no one has actually reported receiving the bonus? As of today, I have fulfilled the stated terms with a “real” DD (and funded my smart savings account finally). So let the count down begin… Any bets on how fast or whether the $100 bonus posts? We shall see….
No telling what will happen. They don’t seem on the ball for anything, so I am betting it’s going to be manually posted after we complain.
I did PenFed, posted as TYPE: TRNSFR… and NFCU, like usual, posted as P2P. Real DD will be here NLT 10/1.
Apparently, DFAS caps allotments for retirees at 6 (even though MyPay says 15), and that includes my two that go toward dental and vision. So, this month I hit my cap and they did not include this allotment I submitted. (even though it did not give an error or alert me, they just never processed it.) Guess I get to just hope one of my fakes makes the cut.
So, you are faking it too?
Interesting! No, I even did DD of pay, not just an allotment. Bonus has not posted yet though.
Did the real DD show up as “ACH ECC PPD”? Schwab Brokerage shows up as that, as does the interest earned on the account. That’s the best I am going to be able to do for the silly 30-day time limit.
It coded as “Deposit DFAS-CLEVELAND / TYPE: FED SALARY DATA: ZKA380500NET PAY CO: DFAS-CLEVELAND %% ACH ECC PPD.” So maybe you are good?
Sounds a lot more convincing than mine…
Deposit SCHWAB BROKERAGE / TYPE: MONEYLINK CO: SCHWAB BROKERAGE %% ACH ECC PPD
I tried to call DFAS a few days ago about my allotments they didn’t change/add, and on the recording, it just said they are having system issues and disconnects you. Quality govt service. Really annoys me, because had I known, I would have better prioritized. I thought the limit was 15, per MyPay.
Wouldn’t surprise me if the CU manually posts the bonus. Can’t imagine many military folks knew about this one or cared enough for only $100. If so, you’re in, I’m out. I might try to put $100 allotment next month and then hope the 30-day thing was just words and not enforced. They added that restriction recently.
Still nothing? No bonus?
Nope, nothing. Wonder if I can message them or will have to call? I don’t see anything on the timing for the bonus to post. In one week, it will have been 30 days since my actual direct deposit posted. So my plan is to call then and see what they say.
Still waiting? Nothing for me… grrr. Did $100 allotment, even though it’s past time because that time limit was fairly new, deposit currenting pending.
I had forgotten about it until you posted. I just SM’d the “Special Credits Department“ from within the app. I have no idea what such a department of a credit union would do, so maybe I will learn that as an added bonus. 😉
I received a reply, but because I am a bank account rookie and not a qualified “bank bonus geek,” I didn’t specify what promotion I was inquiring about. So I just wrote to say that it was the “$100 checking bonus when you opened a new checking account, as a military member, with a direct deposit of $100+ within 30 days of account opening.” I’ll let you know what response I receive to my latest query…..
$100 bonus posted a couple hours ago, with a message from the “New Accounts MSR at Global Credit Union:”
I have processed this with my supervisor and we did note the error preventing you from getting the bonus of $100.
Not sure what “error” there was, but now have the bonus…. I think you will have to ask as well.
Yeah, going to message them now. I might not have the same result as I faked it, and did an allotment this month, but it was well past the 30 days. Guess I will find out. Thanks for following up.
Success.
11/04/2020 Deposit / WEAR RED PROMO $100.00
Manually applied by a “New Accounts MSR at Global Credit Union” supervisor.
Did you keep your “smart savings” account? It seem I haven’t received any interest on my $650 since 9-30-2020. Maybe Global pays quarterly interest on that account? If so, may be I will close as it seems likely I may forget about the account.
Yeah, I did keep it. For now. Yeah, it’s quarterly payments. It’s always a coin toss to keep accounts open or not. Maybe they will come out with a referral program? Seems like several credit unions have done it lately. Or, maybe we will miss out on a future promo since we are existing customers? Is it worth carrying $600 next year for about $36 in interest? Yet another 1099 INT?
I keep all my accounts in Mint so I don’t forget, and all my account numbers in a paper notebook in case I croak unexpectedly.
You are responsible for any transactions that take place, and after 30-60 days from the statement in which they appeared, they don’t have to do anything about it, even if in error. I’ve had a handful of debit cards that got compromised, some that never left the house, so, it can happen. I had one teller take money out of my account, I think at Old National Bank in another state, and they had pulled up the wrong account for a customer in the lobby. I had to call the branch the withdrawal took place in, and they thought they put me on hold, and I could hear the convo. The teller was adamant, oh yeah, he was in this morning and withdrew $xxx. Then they figured out the last name was wrong. All of which got fixed… but annoying and costly if you don’t monitor your accounts.
I drew down my accounts to zero and messaged them to close. If they have have a referral program in the future and I rejoin, I’ll go thru your referral link. Will be happy when accounts are closed….
DP: OOS. Next day approval. No Chex pull. Likely pull EWS as they use Fiserv’s CashEdge for money transfers, same as Comerica & PNC et al. No hard pull. I am sure they SP at least one of the big 3 CRA’s to preapprove for other products, which my pre-approval page is blank in online banking.
Applied 9/3/20
Approved 9/4/20
Online access 9/5/20
Based on Svy’s comment, I uploaded my D/L & Mil ID during the application, then uploaded a util bill from the status page for “address verification”. Sent a message letter to let them know.
They don’t seem to be quick about communication. Got a Docusign request the next day and I signed immediately. Tried to use that member number to try to register for online banking. I had to call them to find out the temporary password. For online banking, your registered user name is your 6 digit member number and the password is GCU (capitalized) followed by the last 5 of your SSN. EXAMPLE: GCU12345 You do change both username and password after the initial login. Possible they normally wait until funding clears to notify the new customer, but I am bulldozing my way in early.
ACH & MICR number available in online banking, and both numbers are the same for checking. (unlike Service C.U., that has two different numbers in those spots, but either works.) They also used the exact same web interface as SCU, as do many credit unions.
I did signup for the Smart Savings as part of the application, and I see both the Smart Savings and the required Prime Savings have the same ACH number. I imagine ACH will default to the Prime acct, but I find it’s best not to link external accounts to Credit Union savings. Some of them have funny rules about ACH, even NFCU, which doesn’t allow outgoing ACH, not even trial withdrawals, from savings. Best to just transfer the money out of checking manually.
So anyway, if you are proactive you can get approved in one business day… I will gladly pick up the $100 bill people are leaving on the table. Jason_08
Nice! I am still learning from how you report, and likely I am lazy. The account numbers for the smart savings and prime savings are the same. So I am not sure how to get the $650 into the smart saving. What do you recommend? None of the initial funding posted even though the account was opened on 8-31-2020.
Just push money into checking and then transfer it to the savings of your choosing. Guessing any money you transfer to the savings from an external bank will probably go to the Prime savings, but not 100% sure. Like I said, some CU’s have funny rules about ACH, even NFCU, which doesn’t allow outgoing ACH, not even trial withdrawals, from savings.
Yeah, they do seem to be on the slower side, but getting the account open in a day is respectable. And the holiday weekend isn’t helping things.
While I don’t have any funds to transfer yet, within the app, it doesn’t show smart savings as an option, only prime savings. Strange!
My Prime & Smart savings shows up in-app and in the browser… $0.00 balance. 😷
My smart savings account shows; however, when I go to the transfer funds function, it is not an option.
When I go to transfers in-app, all 3 accounts show up on the pull-down menu on the To: side. Still at zero though, so none of them show up on the From: side.
Did they ever do your account funding? When I applied, I requested ACH from NFCU… and they haven’t pulled a dime. I pushed a $100 in there just so it has a positive balance.
No, no funding still, and as of yesterday my $650 mobile check deposit was still on hold. Slow going…
A lot of places put longer holds on new accounts and check deposits, but come on, the ACH should have gone through by now. This is why I usually just put the bare minimum funding on the application, but because of the sweet interest rate, I thought this would simplify things. Guess I will reach out and see what they are doing. Of course, I won’t believe them anyway and have to leave a $600 buffer in my NFCU account for the next month.
It has been so long that I don’t remember how I initially funded. I guess I should use a spreadsheet. I will work on getting a new gravitar associated with a new email address. I share this one with DH, so it would freak him out to see something like that.
Testing new gravitar
Yeah, I see what you are talking about with the Smart Savings… you can’t deposit a mobile check directly to the Smart Savings. You can transfer to it, though… at least that is what I see. Guessing sub-savings accounts were a secondary though and they have them separated in some weird way. Since they have the same account number, it sort of makes sense. The check cashing service is probably yet another separate entity, and because the external account numbers are the same, you can only put money into one savings account.
Also, I still don’t understand the gravatar dilemma… if you made the Gravatar account with the same e-mail address you use with DoC Svy, all your old comments would have an icon. I see you have comment history, so all those messages would get the new icon.
No response yet today on my SM if they are ever going to process my opening deposit. I should pick up the phone and call, but I won’t trust the answer they give anyway. Account is funded, so not really too worried.
Gravatar is used on other sites, maybe with all that use word press? DH uses on Utube and possibly others. As of yesterday, my funds still aren’t available to figure out if I can transfer to Smart Savings. I see no need to call at this stage though.
Gravatar is used at other sites too, besides WordPress… like my Yahoo icon changed.
I was looking at it and the Global check cashing service is Ensenta… which oddly enough is the service Ally uses. But they have the settings much more restricted and going to have longer hold times.
And, I was comparing to Service Credit Union since the web interface is the same, and their sub-savings accounts there get a real ACH account number. So, confirmed, that is the difference here. Savings transfers at Global are internal only and the Smart Savings really isn’t a separate account.
Funds from mobile deposit made one week ago still not available as of this am. Geez, Global!
TL/DR: NINE business days for new accounts. See last sentence.
FUNDS AVAILABILITY POLICY DISCLOSURE
5. SPECIAL RULES FOR NEW ACCOUNTS — If you are a new member, the following special rules will apply during the first 30 days your account is open.
Funds from electronic direct deposits to your account will be available on the day we receive the deposit. Funds from deposits of cash, wire transfers, and the first $5,525.00 of a day’s total deposits of cashier’s, certified, teller’s, traveler’s, and federal, state, and local government checks will be available on the next business day after the day of your deposit if the deposit meets certain conditions. For example, the checks must be payable to you. The excess over $5,525.00 will be available on the ninth business day after the day of your deposit. If your deposit of these checks (other than a U.S. Treasury check) is not made in person to one of our employees, the first $5,525.00 will not be available until the second business day after the day of your deposit. Funds from all other check deposits will be available on the ninth business day after the day of your deposit.
You are a machine! And I mean that in the nicest possible way, 😉
A gadget is another name for a tool!
Wow, 9th biz day; so still not available, nor has initial funding shown up. However, my DFAS ACH showed as pending two days in advance. Hopefully available tomorrow so I can hopefully move to “smart savings”
Yeah, ACH has been normal, from what I can see. They just have a huge grudge on check deposits while you’re a new member.
Well, when they process ACH, they are normal. They forgot to do my opening deposit and doing it now. Not real impressed with these guys.
William Charles Request an article update. They added terms that DD needs to occur within 30 days from account opening. That’s a pretty short timeframe.

Did anybody out of the area try for this??? Get approved?
I applied today, active duty military in DC. The online application stated that my application was pre-approved and to expect a Global Credit Union representative to reach out to me.
They called. My application has been approved.
So, no hard pull? Everything going ok?
No hard pull. Still waiting on account opening materials.
Everything go alright? I might do this one next month… too late to change my DD now for Aug.
Nope, I still haven’t received my member number after calling them to report it 2 weeks ago. I can’t log in to online banking without it and they will not give it out over the phone, physical mail only. I did finally receive a statement in the mail with my account number, but without access to online banking, it’s effectively useless. I’m now well outside 30 days so I might chalk this up to a loss; only missing out on $100 anyway.
Sometimes with credit unions, you can decipher the member number from the account numbers on the statement… xxxxxx-701 the x’s would be the member number.
And if it took that long to get any account documents to even setup DD, then you should ask for an exception/extension. They just added that 30-day language in there, probably trying to get people to hurry up and start using their accounts without increasing the bonus to get more interested parties.
Also, instead of asking for information over the phone or normal e-mail, they should have been able to communicate with you over the application status page. There is messaging available there. Because it’s “secure”, they should have been able to get your member number to you. You can use the below link, or go back through their website, click apply for checking acct, then “Check Status”.

Are veterans or IRR eligible?
I’m done classifying myself as a lowly veteran. I did my time and retired. Anyone who disagrees can suck it.
No datapoints…. Terms state “Must be opened with Military ID (Active duty military, reserve, national guard or retired).”
If you can get the Credit Union to agree your Veteran ID Card (VIC) from the VA is a Military ID is probably highly YMMV. Says nothing about DD-214, inactive, veterans… so I am thinking not.
Their “Smart Savings” account also offers 6.5%APR on the first $650. My wife, my daughter, and I all have one.
Im interested in that Smart Savings for the high APY, but how is Only $650 considered “smart”? This seems more like a youth savings. Also notice that their site contains 2 different rates for that type account And lists 6.50 APY as the ‘max’. Does it range from .10 to 6.50 and if so whats the criteria? Hows it working for you?
It’s “smart” if you only keep $650 in there. Between our three accounts we have $1,950 earning 6.5%APR or $126.75 per year. I’ll probably just transfer out the earned interest a couple times per year – not that much work. There are not goops to jump thru to get the 6.5%APR. Any money over the $650 will get the reduced interest rate so just only keep $650 in that account.
*hoops
A HP for $100? Should I sink to this level ? lol
In 2018… nobody reported a HP. Or, they just never reported back. But people would be very likely to report it here if they did. I figured they would find a reason to deny me, probably on Chex inquires, on top of being WAY out of the area.
William Charles So, that’s interesting they reached out to you. That means someone is monitoring the click thru referral sites/stats, or someone dropped your name. They said it’s a hard pull? Did they specify the CRA? Because, sometimes bankers think of Chex inquiries as a hard pull. I am still curious about the locality requirements – if truly any retiree or active duty military person can join?
I am a little disappointed that my Brothers and Sisters of the Armed Forces haven’t reported back, other than one to say they got denied. I would really like to see some DP’s before jumping on a $100 bonus.
They contacted Chuck about it, it was a very strange e-mail.
They ask on the application as a required question where you heard about their credit union, and then it says “please explain”. Guessing enough people dropped your site by name.
I just put “friend”, and if they ask me about it, I will just tell them I don’t feel comfortable giving their name.
No military reported back on getting approved.
1. Chex inquiry sensitivity?
2. Hard Pull?
3. Local only? I think this is going to be the key factor for disapproval.
Hopefully someone can chime in. Please?
1-immediate approval; so I don’t believe the CU is chex inquiry sensitive
2-no hard pull notification, but the SR said since my credit record had already been pulled, wouldn’t I want to apply for a credit card and their overdraft service? (I said no to both.)
3. Applied from NoVA, so local is not required. I uploaded an image of my retiree ID card during the application, along with the DR license. So the only request for documentation was a recent statement with my current address. I have asked for verification that I enrolled in the promo, but haven’t heard back yet.
I need to figure out my account number for changing over my DD; anyone have any insight? I guess I may need to call as I did not see it on the application; I only saw my member number. I learned that my account # is the ACH number or MICR, which you can see by clicking on the account and then a down arrow for account info.
Thanks for the reminder Svy … my app went pending tonight. Weird you got immediate approval but they asked for address verification later?
Nothing really unique about the experience thus far… other than having to type in the Military promo code manually.
Okay, maybe the message upon applying was a representative will contact you w/I 1 biz day or something like that? So my memory/data points are not to be trusted, apparently…. I re-filled out some application paperwork today that had my member number on it. So it was definitely a manual approval.
No worries – After you do enough of these they all become a blur.
I will upload a util bill and send them a message on the status page… that should get their attention. If they are like SCU, that shaves a lot of time off when they have all the documents right away.
But my after application message said:
Thank you for choosing Global Credit Union! Your application is being reviewed, a Global Representative will contact you shortly.
Did anybody ever find out hard or soft pull?
