Global Entry To Increase Fee To $120 (PenFed, Capital One, American Express, Barclays, Chase & Citi To Increase Fee Reimbursement)

Update 9/23/24:PenFed now increasing it to $120 on the Pathfinder card.

Update 8/9/24: Capital One now raising the fee reimbursement to $120 as well.

Update 8/1/24: According to TPG, American Express is also raising the fee reimbursement to $120.

Update 5/25/24: Barclays also increasing the GE fee to $120 on the Aviator Silver card.

Update 4/22/24: Chase will also be increasing the Global Entry fee reimbursement to $120.

Update: Citi is the first card issuer to announce they will be increasing the Global Entry fee reimbursement to $120 on the Citi Prestige & Citi/AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard.

Original post: Global Entry is increasing the membership fee from $100 to $120 on October 1, 2024. In addition NEXUS (which provides Global Entry, TSA PreCheck and expedited entry into Canada) will increase the fee from $50 to $120. Minors (under the age of 18) who apply at the same time as a parent or legal guardian will be exempt from the fee (currently they pay full price for Global Entry, NEXUS was already free). According to the government the fee is changing as $100 is no longer sufficient to cover the costs associated with the application. It’s unclear if credit card issuers that currently provide a Global Entry credit will increase this from $100 to $120, but I’d be surprised if they didn’t as this fee is generally a low cost to administer.

  • Does anyone have any data points around whether the Bank of America Premium Rewards / Premium Rewards Elite and/or US Bank Altitude Reserve / Altitude Connect will reimburse Nexus under the new fee schedule? It looks like PRE / USBAR have now updated the reimbursement amount to $120, but PR / USBAC are still at $100.

    • I don't know anyone who has renewed Nexus at the new $120 rate, but the last time I renewed Nexus in early 2023, the transaction showed "USCUSTOMS TRUSTEDTRAVELER", so I doubt the banks will be able to tell a $120 Global Entry charge from a $120 Nexus charge.

  • Finally, US Bank has updated its Guide to Benefits to reflect the new $120 limit. Some parts of their website still show $100, but the guide is updated to reflect the 10/1 date.

    • ^ At least for the Altitude Reserve, doesn't seem like the Connect card has been updated yet. I am guessing this will happen soon.

      • I used my Connect last month and haven’t gotten a credit yet, anyone knows if it happens at statement cut?

  • I work for BOA and we have a notice today stating our Premium Rewards and Elite credit card is increasing the reimbursement to $120 also.

      • Sorry, I was incorrect. So far it’s just the Elite card with the bank saying they’ll reimburse up to $100 on Premium Rewards. I hope they decide to change course and allow for a full refund on the PR card also.

        • Thanks for the clarification. Looks like the webpage for the Elite still says the reimbursement is for $100. Do you know if the policy is already in place, just not published?

    • Another way would be to tag a $1.08 TSA fee to every ticket sold and slowly increase that to 14.94 in two years.

  • Just received an email from PenFed confirming the credit is increasing to $120 on the Pathfinder Card.

  • Just a reminder that CapOne is the only bank in the bunch who treats those credits are taxable income (!) So if you exceed $600 of "free" stuff (including Referral Bonuses, courtesy credits and for CapOne Global Entry credit) you will receive 1099. Got one for year 2022 (2 referral bonuses and 2 GE credits between 2 separate cards).

Not saying not to use it, but just take that into consideration when collecting it.

    • That's absurd and shame on them for doing that; this should not fit the definition of income, because it requires spending.

      • I am on board with you 100%. I started with requesting an explanation from them what this 1099 is for (before even contesting it). My plan was to get an official explanation what this 1099 is for, and with that on hands, actually file a complaint.. because the only thing I had is "my guess". It was not a guess at that time, as I saw many data points, and the numbers all matched their evaluation of the points + 2 GE credits, but still I needed a proof that they actually included that into 1099.

It took me many calls, with no avail. First CS line, obviously, did not know a thing... they only sent me to "my tax advisor", and my argument that you (Cap One) sent me the 1099, which means you (Cap One) "paid" me that amount.. so it is on you (Cap One) to explain me what you paid me for... and that logical argument felt on deaf ears.

I ended up filing the complaint with their own department and after several months, the response was that they think they did everything correctly (without providing any details). And my next step would be send them letter in writing to proceed with any further steps, and.. I just dropped it. I already filed my taxes by then (and obviously, included that 1099.. I know many of readers here explained that I could have corrected it with explanations.. etc.. but I have chosen to loose $200 and do not start any discussions (even not probable) with IRS because of that). At the end of the day the lesson is learned, and I am way ahead with my Cap One bonuses... and did not want to end up on their black list.. missing on a bonus in the future would cost me way more :)

So, I have no idea if they fixed this for TY 2023 or will for 2024, and I am not planning to find out :)

        Good luck
