The Offer
- Google Store is offering a free pixel 6a when you trade in a pixel 5a. Just pay taxes and fees (~$21.88). It’s pricing at $299 and 5a has a $299 trade in. Other trade in values as follows:
- Pixel 5 $299
- Pixel 4 $245
- Pixel 4XL $235
- Pixel 4a or 4a 5G $250
- Pixel 3a $200
- Pixel 3 $197
Our Verdict
Some people actually prefer the 5a due to the fingerprint sensor being better and a few other issues with the 6a.
FYI: For anyone trying to maximize CC cash back for this deal, Per this DoC comment by reader LDoc (https://www.doctorofcredit.com/pixel-7-pre-order-get-up-to-200-store-credit-amazon-google/#comment-1459714), Google Store purchases on a Visa card code as “Miscellaneous and specialty retail stores”.
Also, another DP: A family member of mine made an order on Google Store using Discover with GPay (albeit making the purchase using a laptop computer) and it did NOT code as a digital wallet payment for 5% CB.
Jenny Once you follow DoC’s link, click on “Ways to Buy” then “Shop Trade-In”.
I called Google & they say there is no such offer. I took a second look at the link here and see the Pixel 6a could be free with qualifying phones. They list fancy Samsungs etc. There’s a lot of fine print. I never use the 5a. I purchased it only because some guy in an aquarium forum posted a few spectacular fish closeups with that phone. I later learned one wants a Samsung Galaxy for specialty subjects; it has several digit SLR capabilities which the Google phone lacks.
Maybe the very nice Google rep and I’m missing something. Please post if you know more.
Just follow the steps, it definitely works: $299 to buy the 6a, $299 back when they receive your 5a. You’re only out the sales tax net.
I bought a used 5 on eBay. Am I eligible for the trade in? Where is this done? Do they have Google sores?
You bet and it’s a great idea you have.

I am also trading in my 5a, because I have been using it for 1 year 3 months, and it’s good to have a new phone for free with a brand new battery.
Why 4XL is cheaper than 4?
For all the experts:
How much better is the 7 than the 6A?
Currently very happy with my 3 but the battery and port are going.
There are some good comparison sites that get into detail, but I ended up picking up another 6a with this deal rather than jumping to the 7. Looked to me like minor benefits from the CPU and camera upgrades.
Even for the Pixel 4a trade in much better deal than Aug… basically 3-4mo difference of $100. Oh well 🤷🏼♂️
I went from the Pixel 4a to the 6a and am reasonably happy. I actually traded in my older Pixel 3a to get this 6a on the last deal. Might have to send in the 4a on this deal and use my Google Store credit to make this virtually a free upgrade from a used phone to a new one I can resell. Hmm…
harder to resell than you think
Hope to prove you wrong! lol
Proved you wrong!
Finally got around to posting it on Facebook Marketplace last week for $280. Had plenty of offers for less but finally sold it today for $280. Merry Christmas to me!
Plus $100 store credit for future use via pixel fan referral. (Facebook group)
Plus another %10 back in store credit with 1tb+ Google 1 plan? https://www.doctorofcredit.com/targeted-amex-offer-google-one-get-30-back/
Seems the trade in are slightly better with 7. (Supposedly 7 fixed most of the issues with the 6/6a)
Got $100 for working cracked screen iphone 6. Not bad.
Just adding my two cents. Had a Pixel 5a and after 2 1/2 years it went bad on me. Couldn’t ever get it to boot back up. Had read where the 5a had reports of bad motherboards after 2 years. Sent in to Google and they are replacing with a 6a. I may take the 6a and trade in for an 8 or 8 Pro due to the camera enhancements.
Wow, they are offering $265 for my 5a with a cracked screen. Surely a no brainer to upgrade for $35?
Given the cracked screen I think so
