We reported on the newly available offer on the Citi Premier card to get 60,000 Thank You points for card members after spending $3500 on the card. (The offer link does not appear to be working anymore.)
Many of us just applied for this card over the past few months since they recently simplified the requirements to get the 50k points. Doesn’t feel good to be losing out on the extra 10k points which we could have gotten under the new offer.
The good news is that you’ll probably be able to get the extra 10k points if you’ve signed up within the past 90 days. Most of us are just about 90-days since signup, slightly more or slightly less, since that’s when Citi improved the offer requirements. If you are over 90 days, you may get lucky and get a match as well.
Here’s a few options for going about getting the higher bonus:
- Try SM (secure message) in your online login. If you signed up within 90 days, it’s likely that this will work to get you the match of 10k points. Note that you will likely have to spend the extra $500 in order to get the points since the 60k offer needs $500 more in spend.
- Try calling. Seems that calling has more success than SM sometimes.
- Ask for a supervisor. If you’re past 90-days, the front-line rep won’t be able to help you, but some have had success with supervisors, at least getting a smaller goodwill offer of 5000 points. For a few minute phone call, that’s not bad.
If using SM, be sure to show them the link to the offer. [UPDATE: Link appears to be dead now.] When calling, mention that you’re a Citigold client if you are one, and that may help getting the supervisor to go beyond the official rules for you as a goodwill gesture.
It appears that the official Citi rule now is that they’ll process a match within 90 days if you got a direct offer targeted to you. For public offers, they often seem to be willing to match the higher bonus if you’re within 90-days; if the front-line rep can’t do it, the supervisor will hopefully do it for you.
Citi just keeps improving and improving. Greatly improved signup bonuses. Adding a 14-day grace period for the signup bonus. And now they appear to have made it an official rule that they’ll match a bonus within 90-days, at least if you got a targeted offer, and often even a public offer. (We’ll update the post, Which Credit Card Issuers will Match a Higher Signup Bonus? to reflect this.)
