Just signed up. I seen the comments that some people like this 6% savings account so much that they have up to five accounts? Can you get multiple HEB brand savings accounts or do you have to go with different co-branded NetSpend accounts to get multiples? Does anybody have any information on this?

Austin,

According to this comment, you can have multiple HEB 6% accounts: #1903105 . However, I forgot about this until I just saw your comment.

Evilex,

Are you going to try for more? I’m really tempted to try for a 2nd as 6% is looking really good nowadays.

I can’t open any more, the max is 6(afaik), i tried to open a new one years ago, although i was initially approved for it, once it arrived i couldn’t get it to work(can’t remember why exactly, spoke to an agent to see if he could manually do it, he told me i needed to close one of my active accs in order to activate the new”, later on i applied for the heb debit(few days after going live) and went smoothly making it my 6th account, not sure if you can open more than 1 of the same, i read a long time ago you couldn’t, but i didnt’t try it myself other than the above, but i was already capped so you may be able to open 2+ 6% ones if you don’t have the cap(big maybe and i wouldn’t count on it).

Evilex,

I’m confused by your comment. You wrote that you tried for an HEB Debit years ago but then wrote that “later on” you applied for the HEB Debit and was approved.

Can you clarify?

Also, the point is that vc told me that she has (or had) 4 or 5 open HEB Debit accounts.

Wouldn’t you rather have 5 accounts that have a maximum of $2K at 6% than 5 accounts that have a maximum of $1K at 5%?

December 11, 2024 18:14

Very interesting. 5+ more cards at 6% $2k balance does sound enticing.

Do we know if anyone has closed existing NetSpends just to reopen with the HEB Debit 6%?

I currently have 6 other NetSpends. I can’t even activate replacement (new expiry date) cards because the automated system recognizes an error and transfers me to an agent who tried, but said I would have to close an existing active NetSpend just to get the activate the replacement. So for a few of my accounts, the cards are expired, but I can still log on, move cash, and basically use as if I had an active card…

Seeing how buggy NetSpend is, I wouldn’t want to be stuck with 6 closed slots that can’t be used towards another card… That’d be worse case

Jim,

I agree that it’s enticing. That’s why I brought it up. 😀

See this comment from vc: #1903105 . Maybe you’ll get lucky and she will explain how she got 4 HEB Debit account earning 6% at $2K each.

I am thinking of applying for a 2nd now and if they demand that I close 1 of my cards, I will gladly close my Porte account that is currently collecting dust. How does that sound for a plan?

Evilex
Evilex (@guest_1968291)
December 11, 2024 19:09

That sounds like a good idea, nothing to lose using this tactic, btw they won’t “demand” nothing out of you, in fact they won’t ever contact you about anything, last time i applied for a 2nd netspend and got approved, i couldn’t activate it and yet i was never asked anything by them on why did i try opening more than the limit allowed.

Jim
Jim (@guest_1968307)
December 11, 2024 19:52

Just FYI, when I was trying to activate my replacement cards ~2 years ago (new expiry date), they initially tried and said I had to close some older cards/accounts, so I said let me think about it.

Within a few hours, Netspend fraud had blocked access to all 7 accounts and provided me instructions to call in and upload verification docs (drivers license, social, and utility bill). I uploaded then called in, answereed a few more KYC questions, then the rep reviewed my uploaded docs and unfroze everything. Took less than 4 hours, and very straight forward.

But just be aware, with multiple accounts and Netspend’s various bugs, there’s also fraud/verification review…

December 12, 2024 21:10

I recall from the old DoC thread the limit is/was 3 accounts per bank, e.g. Metabank, etc. https://www.doctorofcredit.com/guide-to-5-interest-prepaidsavings-accounts

So I think I had followed that rule and opened my first 5: Netspend, Ace, Brinks, WU, and HEB. Then years later, opened HEB Debit and MLB, so that’s 7.

Not including Porte (now closed) and All Access (didn’t realize had $5 monthly fee until after app, so closed immediately before activating).

So I think the phone rep is probably correct in stating 5 active cards at a time, as a few of my cards have expired but without effect on the accounts…

She responded to me and told me that she simply signed up on the website for a new account username with all the same information. That’s exactly what I did too luckily. I never received any kind of email confirmation and when I tried logging in on the website with my new username, it said that the username was invalid, so I wasn’t even sure if it went through until I tried signing up with the same new username again and that time it told me that I needed to wait 7 to 10 business days for the card to arrive in the mail.

I just tried to apply for a 2nd HEB Debit account both using the same email address and my 1st and a different email address. Both times, I received the message “We are unable to complete your request at this time.” after entering only my name, address and email address.

Austin,

Did you use all of the same info as your 1st HEB Debit account? Do you have any other Netspend products (ie Ace Elite, Brink’s, Porte, etc.) or are the 2 HEB Debit accounts your only 2 Netspend/Pathward products?

Evilex,

I don’t have the nerve to close any of my Netspend products as I’m not confident enough that HEB will let me proceed even if I do that. How about you?

Yeah I like the card. Just discovered that you can link your other HEB debit account username to your primary one as a friend and do free instant transfers between the accounts, and I don’t see any limits for that. Plus I was able to link my PayPal debit card in the HEB debit app to do free instant pull transfers. And of course the PayPal debit card is linked to the PayPal balance, which can do free instant pulls from all of my checking account and brokerage debit cards that I have linked, which is all of them.

Looks like only a max of three cards at a time can be directly linked to the HEB debit app to do instant transfers, but if the PayPal debit card is one of those three, then you have indirect access to instant transfers from your full list of debit cards connected to PayPal.

The only slight issue is that I noticed it won’t recognize Fidelity as a bank to send the money back out for free, so I have to use BofA, capitalone, or whatever, and only one can be linked at a time for ach push transfers, as far as I can tell.

Austin
Austin (@guest_1976214)
December 29, 2024 13:00

Looks like you can extend the number of debit cards used for instant pull transfers into the account beyond just three maximum by making one of them a PayPal debit card. That way you indirectly have access to instant pull transfers from all debit cards connected to your PayPal account.

I understand why you can’t do instant push transfers back out again for free, but I wish that the ACH transfers out were at least compatible with Fidelity, but unfortunately that’s not the case. Luckily I was able to link it to Bank of America so I can push out funds for free with a standard ACH transfer into that bank. But I will have to wait two to four business days to complete two ACH transfers to get it into my main Fidelity account

Austin
Austin (@guest_1976215)
December 29, 2024 13:05

Have you linked the HEB debit card to your PayPal account and tried doing an instant pull transfer from PayPal? Looking at the HEB debit fee structure, it looks like it’s possible that they would charge you for this action, so I haven’t tried it, but if it were free, that would be super awesome to have instant transfers both in and out of the account for free.

Quick follow-up. I tried to apply for a new HEB Debit (#2), not touching my existing Netspends, and was denied “We are unable to complete your request at this time” just at the name/address stage.

I changed my email, as well including my middle name or spelling out my Street rather than St, then again with all 3x CRAs unfrozen, then finally with a different browser/device, but all the same.

Also tried calling in the number on the HEB Debit page, so automatically transferred to Netspend’s customer service unit. Unfortunately, rep didn’t have way of applying over the phone.

Asked if I needed to close some existing cards, but he said the system should allow more accounts/cards, just that they only allow 5 active cards under a social. So it’s basically a bug (or moreso feature) that the application system should allow continued applications/approval. But will into issues if trying to activate, basically as I experienced with my replacement cards over the years.

So presumably I’ve hit some limit…

Hopefully some data points emerge of more HEB Debits after having closed existing 5% Netspend cards.

Looking forward to your Porte experience, thanks Eric 🔗

I would absolutely love 5-6 heb @ 6%, but i read a long time ago you couldn’t open more than 1 of the same(i.e 2 netspend or 2 brinks etc), i didn’t verify this info i just thought it was fact(have others done it? (Perhaps vc meant to say 5 total 1 of each instead of 5 heb debit?, i would love to confirm this info), years ago before heb debit launched i applied for a 2nd netspend(i already had 1 of each at the time(5 accounts total), 1np, 1 w.u, 1 heb, 1 brinks and 1 ace, the 2nd netspend o tried was approved but once it arrived i couldn’t make it work, i applied again later(about a year or teo after the 2nd netspend), this time for the newly launched heb debit, it worked and i got up to 6 accounts(previously 5),

Just applied for my second debit account, and approved online with all the same information including name, address, social, etc.. except I did create a new username on hebdebit.com for the second account. Honestly I’m not sure if that was the right thing to do or not. Strangely I did use the same email address with a new username and it worked. Wasn’t really expecting it to. Now waiting for new debit card to arrive at same address as previous debit card, so I can activate it and then activate my second 6% savings account hopefully at that point. Maybe the new version is a true correction, but everyone should certainly make sure that they read the terms that they personally recvd instead of going by what one person posts.

Also, from what I understand based on my experience w prepaid cards from diff companies, some states limit monthly fees. Could be why there are diff versions of the doc.

Why did you transfer money out of the HEB accounts? I doubt that you are earning more elsewhere.

vc (@guest_1903324)
September 1, 2024 10:04

I’m already on the pay as you go plan if that’s what you meant. Hopefully, everyone else here is doing that, too, bc even paying the $5 reduced fee cuts your interest in half (int is only $10 a month).

The main reason that I’m closing is bc I only signed up again bc I’d also get a sign-up bonus, which they didn’t pay. I’ll just sign up again in 6 months and only sign up for 1 acct to avoid any confusion by their reps…

Yes, it’s easy to earn more than 6% elsewhere at some of the FI listed here. Another reason that I chose NS/HEB over a traditional FI w similar rates is bc there’s no chex hit.

Also, in regards to deciding to close the accts, I look at the overall picture and other solutions, like investing and opp cost. Even with 5 accts, I’m only earning an extra $100 a yr. I’d rather keep that $10k in an acct like a Fid acct as a reserve. I’d be earning around 5% w a core position (so only “losing” 1%) or I could make other “safe” investments w similar or even better returns.

If the funds are just in my core position and I need them, they’ve already cleared, so I don’t have to worry about waiting to use the funds. I could easily miss out on an opp to earn $100 in one trade just by waiting for a $10k transfer to clear.

I could also just use the $10k to meet min bal for other bonuses.

I know it was directed to vc, but in my case i have all netspend accounts on 1-10$ until rates go down a lil further, tbills are better atm, when those go down to about 4.7 or less, i’m bringing all netspend accounts to 1k, heb deb and dcu are the only ones i have fully loaded as they pay 6%, definitely worth it keeping them open since those banks currently paying around 5% will lower rates at the same pace as the fed, netspend won’t(probably)

You seem to have a very similar mindset to me. I also only have about $10 in my Netspend accounts (except for HEB Debit).

I just signed up for my second H-E-B debit card and I’m waiting for it in the mail in hopes of being able to create a second 6% savings account. I did it with the same email address and personal info is before, except I created a new username on hebdebit.com . Did you use the same username for all of your H-E-B accounts? Did I just overcomplicate things for myself by creating two separate HEB debit accounts?

No, you’ll need a separate login for each acct. I used the same email address for all of them, though.

I didn’t realize about this until later and it seems like I never received the inactivity fee and was over the 60 days of inactivity. I did change mine just now to do monthly transfers but I also wonder if it hasn’t fully changed for HEB yet

Not sure what FI means, i have not been hit with any fee, either withdrawals, transfer betwhern netspend accounts
Or outside institutions, haven’t tried transfer using netspend itself, i always initiate my transfer using other banks, so far so good.

FI means financial institution. I don’t think that you’d be hit w any fees yet. The doc that I got said that it wouldn’t start til 9/30.

Evilex,

Do you have more than 1 HEB Debit account also? I am definitely tempted to apply for more accounts but am worried that it will create a problem since I already have 7 Netspend products.

007,

How about you?

Only 1 for me. 2 for P2 but P2 was offered to convert old heb netspend to heb debit and accepted so only applied for one

I have 1 heb and 1 heb debit, i also have 1 netspend, 1 Western Union, 1 Brinks, 1 Ace Elite and Dcu, both dcu and heb debit pay 6%, all 5 netspend pay 5%, a few years ago i tried opening more than 1 of each and failed, i can’t recall what failed, i’m pretty sure it got “approved”, but once the kit was sent to me i coildn’t sign up(i believe that’s what happened, cant recall exactly because it was in 2020 i think. I do remember getting excited because it went past the initial signing up process, but couldnt’t get it to work.

I have exactly the same as you do except I have 2 Brink’s and no regular HEB. I’ll probably just stick with the 1 HEB Debit for now.

I remember reading somewhere that, you may only open 3 metabank and 2 of the other bank(can’t recall the name), W.U, netspend and Ace Elite were considered Meta and Brinks and HEB the other, heb debit didn’t exist at that time, i think that’s why they allowed you to open 2 brinks, because tou didn’t open a regular HEB, if you were to try to open the regular HEB, more likely than not it will be denied.

Is there a backdoor number to call for help? The main number assumes that I already have a card and I don’t think there’s a way to get a human.

I get “We are unable to complete your request at this time” whenever I try to get past the first page of the application. I get this with 5 different browsers on 3 different networks on 4 different devices, all cookies are on, all adblockers disabled, tried incognito and non-incognito.

This happens when I input my real information and also when I input garbage, like “testy mctestface” in Austin TX, stuff like that.

@chuck
I transfered $400 into my HEB Netspend card from T Mobile Money (ach) and got a $40 bonus!
Says “Credit: Applied Incentive Code: 1Q24 Load $400 Get 40.”
I also recievrd this on my Netspend Ace card. Will also try my other two Netspend cards, original and western union.
I don’t know if this is targeted or not. It seems like its a q1 promotion for transferring in $400, so time is ticking.

I did a money order from Fred Meyer but nothing posted. Eventually after a month I complained to their secure message and threatened to file a complaint with the CFPB. Their support agents were useless but I got a phone call a few days later from a person who wanted to see the terms. I sent those over and got the $25 credit posted.

So your P2 was able to get 2 HEB Debit cards each with a $2K Savings account? What other Netspend products does your P2 have?

007
007 (@guest_1770295)
January 3, 2024 22:07

P2 HAS 2 HEB Debit cards each with a $2k savings account but P2 only APPLIED for one. P2 was offered for some time to convert HEB Netspend card to HEB debit card but didn’t want to do it in case it wouldn’t work out. After interest rates went above 5% we gave it a go and it worked. Otherwise has all the standard Netspend cards (5 total well now 4 since we converted one to heb debit) plus Porte. Of note P1 never offered such a conversion. Also we are both in foot print for HEB.

EDITED TO ADD: to make chronology clearer, P2 first applied to heb debit card when it made it to DoC few years ago. P2 only converted heb Netspend card to the heb debit card (hence heb debit card number 2) towards beginning of Q3 or Q4 2023.
