How Hyatt Is Selling The New Category 8 Award Tier (SLH partnership)

Hyatt has confirmed that they will be introducing a new category 8 award level costing 40,000 points per night. Earlier Hyatt announced that they will be partnering with Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH). Hyatt is claiming that no current Hyatt-branded hotels or resorts will move into this new category 8 tier, but some SLH properties will fall under that new tier. I’d consider this short term good news if this means all SLH properties will be bookable with Hyatt points, even if it means some will cost 40,000 points per night. In the medium to long term I’d consider this bad news as Hyatt will almost certainly move some Hyatt branded hotels/resorts into this new tier at some time in the future.

Not good news but there has not been much movement of Hyatt categories in a while.

Any more news on when will the Hyatt and SLH partnership start? They do have a lot of interesting properties…

Was planning on using 150k
ultimate rewards for 6 nights over my honeymoon at PH Maldives in 2020. I’m not holding my breath hoping it stays 25k a night.

I think you will be OK. Maldives is so remote that it does not get flooded with redemptions. It’s actually the kind of place where they “show it off” as a fantasy property. Guests also spend a lot on food during their stay vs. a big city Park Hyatt where you can stay free on points and spend no money in the hotel during your stay.

Well, as they move some properties to Cat 8 in the future, I hope they also don’t move other properties to higher categories to plug the hole in those categories. There currently are no properties in Hawaii costing 30k points, and I’m hoping not to see one even if I’ll never redeem for one.

Their rates are really strange though.

For two properties I’ve found:

12k points or $187 a Night Typically I find 8k redemptions for this price

Another 20k points or $206 a Night Typically I find 8k Redemptions for this price as well.

Maybe they’re just upgrading the category because it’s Hawaii. It’s sad because I really want to take a trip to Hawaii, but at 12k a night minimum that’s a tough sell for a 3 night stay that’s 36k points.
