[Expired] Hy-Vee: Buy Variable-Load Visa Gift Cards with No Purchase Fee

Deal has expired, view more hy-vee deals here.

UPDATE: It seems it was just one store, but isn’t broadly available to anywhere else.

The Offer

Hy-Vee is running a special on Visa gift cards:

  • Pay no purchase fee on variable-load Visa gift cards (can be loaded up to $500).

The Fine Print

  • Valid Thursday through Saturday, 6/28-6/30

Our Verdict

I can’t seem to find this offer showing online, hopefully it’s running in all Hy Vee locations. Just keep in mind that not all locations will allow using a credit card for Visa gift card purchases. You can check the comments from a previous promotion for some more discussion and other tips.

Nice way to run up some spend if you have a way to unload these. Use your Chase Freedom or Discover to get 5x this quarter if you haven’t maxed that out yet. Not sure if you earn fuel points on Visa gift card purchases, I’d guess not.

After visiting 2 different Hy-Vee stores, I have a feeling that it is a company policy to not allow the purchase of Visa gift cards with a credit card. It’s not posted anywhere on the gift card rack. They just ask you how you’re going to pay when you try buying a Visa gift card with a credit card. With that said, their system will allow the purchase with a credit card. If you’re going to buying VGCs at a Hyvee store, I would recommend going through the checkout lane of the youngest looking employee or through the lane of somebody that was called up from stocking shelves to work the registers.

So you’ve gleaned a corporate policy from visiting a whole two stores?

I’ve purchased VGC with a credit card from HyVee in 4 different states, at a bunch of locations. Sounds to me like you give up too easily.

Anyone know which HyVee this is at? I’m in MN but don’t know if it’s at all MN stores or just the one…

Looking at the portion of the address I can still see on the receipt my guess is the New Hope one. Kind of a drive for me though I might try my luck at another location.

On a separate note, they are also running a promotion where you get Bonus Bucks for spending money. I am not sure if it would stack. Here are the details:

Bonus was not applied to my $500 VGC + 5.95 fee Friday about noon.

I also got the fee charged in IL. Unless there is a data point of it happening at another store I fee this whole post is incorrect and maybe jumped the gun a bit.

I did not see this in the weekly ad at Hy-Vee.

After reading the reddit post, I went to my Hy-Vee. I bought the $500 VGC with the birthday cupcake design. about 9:00 PM central time Thursday. I was charged the usual $5.95 fee. CC purchase was painless otherwise. I am in metro Omaha.

Which Hyvee? I am in your area too and have been trying to find a place to MS.

Sucks I saw this now and Hy-Vee supposed has this deal right at the end of the quarter when I am leaving town.

Plattsmouth and Papillion accepted CC, but both charged the $5.95 fee.

Any CC or specific ones? Is there any point to using Discover IT or CF now that the next category is here?

I have 5 Hyvees in my City and only one lets me pay for Gift cards ( other than Hyvee Gift cards in store with a credit card. One workaround is to buy Hyvee gift cards online and you can you those to buy anything

I actually bought 2 of these today before I read this and it didn’t ring up as such. Finishing out my Discover grocery category. I used the Black variable Visa with a $5.95 fee.

I have been refused several times with paying for these with CC so I gave up on Hy-Vee.

The Hy-Vee stores I’ve encountered don’t accept Apple Pay.

I’ve also been denied at Hyvee for trying to buy a Visa gift card with a credit card. They would only let me buy gift cards that were tied to a specific merchant with a credit card. I might try another store with the reports of limited success.
