Update 11/4/24: Deal is back for November 4 – 10, 2024. It’s probably limited now to just one $10 discount; let us know if you try. (ht GC Galore)
The Offer
- Hy-Vee is offering $10 off instantly when you purchase $150+ in Mastercard
The Fine Print
- Valid until 11/15/22
Our Verdict
Purchasing a $500 gift card actually triggers the discount three times for a $30 discount, making this deal significantly better.
Deal History:
- Update 11/6/23: Deal is back 11/6 – 11/12
- Update 5/17/23: Purchasing a $500 card triggers the offer three times for $30 off. Reader Tony notes that no purchase fee was charged either so $500 for $470.
- Update 5/15/23: Deal is back and valid 5/17-5/23. Hat tip to jerseyguy195
I know it’s over, but for reference just wanted to note that I did the $10 off per $150 increment on the same card, used this 4 times. Each time bought (at least) a $450 GC and got the full $30 discount.
The chancer that checked me out this evening wiped the discount, after it had applied, and tried to charge full price. I asked what happened to the discount that was there a second ago and he said, “sorry, my mistake”. Yeah, right.
Hopefully Visa follows this week as in past years…
There was an ad in my store that showed the Visa gift cards will be $10 off $159 starting on 11/11.
The ad says “Limit 5”. It’s totally different from the last few times where it said “$10 off non-stackable.” I’m honestly shocked. And excited. Just booked my flight to DSM.
You few into Des Moines just for this?!?!?
Hy-Vee points and miles meetup?!?!? 🙂
Scored $30 discount plus 5% back Paypal (mine and P2) debit x 4. Not a bad day of work.
What style of packaging was this? I am wondering if $30 comes off all $500 MC GC varieties.
I’ve bought the golf course and the celebration package cards. All fine.
I’m pretty sure it’s not going to be limited to the packaging.
Celebrate!
Anyone have any luck registering them?
Registered and used to pay a medical bill – no problem
Worked this morning. Either needed to wait overnight for the purchase to update, or may have had my vpn running.
Score! $500 MCGC auto rang up for $30 discount. Golf course card packaging was only 5.95 fee. Card starting with 5412
ETA: did not earn fuel points
Update: Card actually starts with 5113. The example on the package was 5412
No way!! Did the golf packaging never get nerfed? I tried all the other cards last year and they were all single discounts. I will be taking vacation the rest of the week if this is true.
My store had a bunch of them. According to my comment from last year I only got one discount as well. I don’t know if this year’s promo is different, or there’s something about the golf packaging that’s making it $30.
I’m guessing it’s the promo that is different, or rather, being implemented differently, than the packaging.
Exact same thing worked for me. Golf packaging at $5.95, put $500 on it and got $30 off!
The Golf Course cards would not activate, as a result they pulled them from rack. The 500 one in the Green Package did and gave the 30 discount with a 5.95 activation fee. Another Score!!
The same Hy-Vee where I had the benefit of no activation fee and fuel rewards back in May worked again! I didn’t try more than $150 given the other posts about the $10 maximum. Card out the door for $140 + $0.25 per gallon in fuel rewards.
No purchase fee?
Some locations “forget”, it’s usually charged.
My local HyVee (Prairie Village, KS) didn’t have the offer unless I got the wrong MC.
Hyvee said they do not accept credit cards. Only cash or debit.
Varies between locations
I have spoken to Hyvee corporate and they said that credit cards are accepted, but managers at store disagree. They make up their own rules. I think it also depends on the customer. If its a big dollar amount I sent my wife (white) to make the purchase. I (non-white) get a lot of resistance when making big dollar purchases. Sometimes I also get asked what I will be using the gift cards for?
Couple years ago my locals only took cash. I also called corporate, who said it was up to the individually run stores. I talked with manager and he said it was to combat fraud but they would accept cc if I showed ID. Since then they’ve changed to accepting cc with ID, and questions on what or who I’m using it for, which genuinely seems to be concern for protecting vulnerable customers from fraud.
Having said all that, understand the additional challenges you face.
