Hyatt Acquires Luxury Hotel Brand Mr & Mrs Smith[Dynamic Award Pricing]

Update 4/24/24: Unfortunately Hyatt is using dynamic award pricing for these hotels rather than a fixed award chart. This means when booking an award room the price you pay is tied to the cash price of that room. You seem to get anywhere from 0.96¢ to 1.4¢ per point. Kind of kills this acquisition for me.

Update 11/1/23: Integration has started, you can now redeem for gift cards at a rate of 1.2¢ per point.

Hyatt has announced plans to acquire luxury hotel brand Mr & Mrs Smith for £53.0 million in cash consideration (~$66.62 million). Mr & Mrs Smith has over 1,500 boutique and luxury properties and is described as ‘asset light’ (e.g they don’t own the properties). Previously IHG had partnered with Mr & Mrs Smith.

Ugh, at the beginning of the IHG/Mr. and Mrs. partnership, the redemption was pretty reasonable in some cases and I got to take advantage of that a couple of times. I loved those stays. It hasn’t been worth it with IHG for a while though and with Hyatt it seems like it definitely would not be a good option. What a bummer. Now just waiting to see how Hilton/SLH partnership ends up looking like…

What a DISGRACE from Hyatt… I will be switching to Hilton now.. my points will have a better use and value there for the SLH properties.

I have been waiting for the Mr. & Mrs. Smith hotels to be available for Hyatt points because they have much more properties in New Zealand than what both Hyatt+SLH offered. Looking over some of the MMS hotel listings in the Hyatt portal, there are no great deals, but all that are currently accepting points offer more than 1cpp in value. So I’m not crying over this dynamic pricing, but I will be waiting for Hyatt to sweeten the deal with special offers before I book.

Its just a matter of time before the whole Hyatt program heads in this direction…sad..i look back at some SLH redemptions i made and those were bargains compared to these crappy rates.

The point redemptions for these hotels are insane… I was playing around California properties and saw 94,000 points for a $900 night. Never seen Hyatt points be so worthless 😂.

Doesn’t help that these Mr and Mrs Smith hotels are extremely pricey, easily in the Park Hyatt range. Never been to one so can’t comment on the value.

I completely agree. I priced out a handful of properties and was seeing 67K+ a night. The cash rates did not support such a redemption.

This is bad. Real bad. A testing ground for dynamic pricing which is likely in the future for the WoH program.

Even if you buy and redeem gift cards on upcoming stay, you still can’t use Hyatt perks/benefits or get qualifying nights though?
