Our Verdict
Go through a portal for another 2%+ cash back. Personally I don’t think Hyatt points as this valuable, but if you have a specific redemption in mind it could be worth doing. I definitely wouldn’t purchase these speculatively.
The real value in using points is avoiding room taxes at resorts which can be quite expensive. Also if you are a globalist, you get free parking at many hotels, but only when you are using points.
I did this earlier in June, and it was a great decision for my summer travels. I ended up going for the full 55,000 maximum, and it saved me at least $500 off the cash prices, plus didn’t have to pay sales taxes and tourist/bed tax at any of my stays.
I’ve noticed during this peak travel period, the cash prices have gone up a lot but the points prices are still pretty much in the usual 5,000, 8,000, 12,000, 15,000 brackets as usual, with of course some peak and off-peak pricing available depending on where you travel and when.
Just wanted to share my two cents on saving $500+ doing this to the max this year. Will probably do it again next year if the 1.68c pricing remains – I can almost always book Hyatt stays for 2c or higher per point.
Normally, I would never consider doing this. But seeing that my points expire end of this year, I bought 3k points at around $50 just to renew the expiration another 24 months.
Wouldn’t it make more sense to transfer points from chase ultimate Rewards to Hyatt than buying Hyatt points?
If you have transferrable chase UR, definitely better
Yes, several ways to extend your Hyatt points. Add points, transfer points, gift points, spend points, use cobranded credit cards and several methods. https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/travel/do-hyatt-points-expire
Awful value. 340 in point or 200 cash value in nyc this week. Upside down
people forgot that point redemption are tax free
I agree that average value is over 2.0 but also also agree I wouldn’t buy speculatively.
Thanks for the heads up! I need a vacation!!
I value Hyatt at 2 cpp (Easily get at Hyatt properties in Las Vegas).
I will also comment that fantastic all inclusives in the Zilara/Ziva brand of Hyatt are well over 2c per point, and there’s value here.
