Hyatt & IHG Free Night Extensions Now Showing Up (New Certificates Only For IHG)

Earlier this month Hyatt announced that free night certificates that expire between March 1st and December 31st, 2020 would be extended until December 31st, 2021. That extension is now showing on those certificates. IHG made a similar announcement and existing certificates have not been updated with the new 18 month validity period but according to Traveling For Miles new certificates are showing this 18 month period.

From a chat today on IHG.

And upon checking, I regret to inform you that as of the moment the IHG Rewards Club Credit Card Anniversary Free Night certificates that are expiring from 1 March 2020 can only be redeemed through 31 December 2020. The expiration date of this annual free night is being re-assessed and reviewed by the higher management.

Later this month, IHG is planning to share an update with cardholders about anniversary certificates with a 2020 expiration date – know that the update will be shared before any 2020 certificates expire.

is the uncapped certificate that was extended until end of 2020 still “uncapped?” I tried some local searches that were category 6 or 7 and it did not show available.. thank you all

To protect my points, I tried to just book something in the future that I may or may not need to cancel. I saw that IHG is now charging TAX on points redemptions and also on free anniversary night redemptions. I previously had something booked for May that I had to cancel, and there had been no tax charges. But now it says you will owe a percentage according to the location and cost of the room on the day you arrive. Anyone else seeing this?

Yes, saw that too. Sounds like another IHG devaluation since none of the other loyalty programs are charging tax on free nights.  William Charles  Chuck

What’s Marriott doing on this front? O/T or related, you decide.

Stupid app forced an update. After the update, cannot login. Had to go through web and saw my certificate extended to 10/14/21 safe and sound.
