Hyatt To Eliminate Single Use Bathroom Miniatures By June 2021

Hyatt has announced that they will be moving to large-format bathroom amenities and will also reduce single-use water bottles by June 2021. This follows similar announcements made by both IHG & Marriott, as well as California stating they will be banned from 2023/24 onwards. I personally think this is a great move as mass use of these single use plastics isn’t sustainable in the long term. Critics will always say that this is nothing but a cost cutting measure by hotels, but I always like to look at these situations as a win-win.

serious question, if my local hipster coffee joint can have compostable “fake plastic” lids for the coffee cups, then why cant hotels use these same materials for the mini shampoo bottles?

I’d like to see a study exploring the precise environmental impact this practice will have on the global ecosystem, especially since many hotels will not be doing this in the near future (or ever).

The only study that you will see, is the one where Hyatt realizes they are spending 10 times more on soap and shampoo, and reverts back to the tiny, little bottles. There was a reason for the tiny, little bottles.

And you think the tiny, little bottles are cheaper than huge, bulk bottles? It doesn’t usually work that way, but maybe this is the one example of bulk items being significantly (10x!!!) more expensive than its small, single-use counterpart items (as you say).

You’re thinking of cheap chemical shampoos that most hotels use instead of the higher-end botanical or plant-based products that are only economically sustainable when distributed in small bottles.

We only have 12 years left and then we all die.
So why can’t we just enjoy the tiny, little bottles?

I haven’t bought shampoo nor soap in 5 years. Guess I better start budgeting for that 😂

I have a drawer in my master bath devoted to miniature bottles. It is a source of contention between me and my lovely wife.
Slowly, my collection will decline.
However, I might have in there enough to last me the rest of my days. I plan to double down until they disappear from all hotels.

I seldom use the stuff hotels provide anyway.

Are the soap nazis demonstrating somewhere in front of a hotel? Is that what’s happening?

Good, long time coming, all hotels need to be making these changes. If someone wants single-use products, let them pay a large premium in the hotel lobby. There’s no reason to continue to waste plastics in this manner.

Why not provide single use items not made of plastic? Bar soap wrapped in normal soap paper, foil ketchup packet shampoos, etc?

Put them in condiment bags or some form of more eco-friendly container that actually breaks down. Last time I was in a hotel that had a large wall mounted shampoo bottle, one of the previous guests thought it was funny to tamper with it and squirt green food coloring into the bottle.

It will be one bottle for both shower gel and shampoo. One liquid, same sauce. I am not sure why not one has mentioned that yet. It”s not bad, but worth discussing.

Good point. Or, the hotels will have two separate dispensers for shower gel and shampoo and not label them, so you have no idea which is which. Total mindfuck.

The only way people respond is through money. People are assholes through and through. Charge anyone that want miniature bottles 20% more per day. All the hygenie nazis will fall in line.

Also remove funding from VA hospitals.
