[Expired] IHG Cardholders: 20% Off Award Stays Of 1-3 Nights (Open To Platinum/Diamond)

Update 1/10/23: This will be open to Platinum/Diamond starting 1/13

The Offer

No direct link to offer, discount shows when logged in

  • IHG is offering cardholders 20% off award stays of 1-3 nights
    • Must book by 1/20/23
    • Valid on stays until 3/10/23

The Fine Print

  • Only those Reward Nights booked by 1/20/2023 for stays during the period from 1/9/2023 through 3/10/2023 qualify for the Offer.
  • The 20% discount is offered at time of booking as identified on the participating hotel’s booking page.
  • The Offer is not available to use along with the “Fourth Reward Night Free” cardmember benefit when booking a stay of four (4) or more consecutive Reward Nights.
  • The Offer will be applied for eligible cardmembers booking three (3) or fewer consecutive Reward Nights.

Our Verdict

Last time this was offered it was available to cardholders first and then elites. Not sure if that will be the case this time or not.

Anyone had experience using points to book a block of rooms using points? (I’m looking to do an extended family getaway/celebration.) Can I book more than 4 or 5 rooms at 1 location for the same night(s) using my IHG account?
Same question for other hotel chains.

Looks like IHG has already upped the points. Should have booked yesterday. Hotel Indigo in Gulf Shores AL was 13k yesterday with discount…this morning 18k.

That’s just that particular hotel. IHG points are often related to the paid rate. So probably the paid rate went up. The discount is off of whatever the hotel is charging in points, so it’s the hotel, not IHG, that essentially upped the points. However, it’s IHG that decided to make their points usually proportional to the paid rate.

Anyway, I don’t know what the trend might be in Gulf Shores AL, but just in case the rate goes down again before Jan 20 (or before your stay if it’s earlier), you might be able to cancel and rebook at a lower rate. So you may want to keep watching it.

Yep…I held off. Will watch it but not hopeful it gets back down to what I saw last night. I noticed a few other listings went up as well. Wondering if demand surge had a part in this.

Search on Sunday morning EST or late Sunday night and see what happens. Or on Monday night to Tues morning.

Is there some magic to those times? Ever since IHG went to variable award pricing, I try to periodically monitor my reservations to try to catch lower point prices. I’m able to get lower prices about half the time. I’ve never seen much rhyme or reason to it, though I’d say it’s always best to lock in early because rates are more likely to go up than down on any given day, and sometimes they pull all award availability.

No, they’re doing it here in Japan too. Those points were much less the past 5 days until yesterday. And, I check incessantly every day, multiple times a day here. IHG, like other top U.S. companies, seem to have a points demand chart that rises and lowers depending on the particular weekday or week-end day you are searching from as I’ve gathered over the past years.

Well, in a low-demand location that I’ve been checking (in Orange County California, in the middle of a big series of rain storms), it didn’t happen. The rates stayed exactly the same (before the discount was applied). So it does depend on the location and the circumstances at that location, it’s not IHG itself.

So if you have the older IHG card with the free night certificate with the hard cap of 40k points this is a good time to use those certs too.

Y’all using the IHG website or app? I’m not seeing a discount, IHG Chase card here.

I used the IHG app. I didn’t see it under offers but discounted points showed up when I searched for hotels.

The more points required for a redemption, the more likely it is that you’ll be charged an amenity fee or similar on the points booking. Has anyone experienced that it’s not required to pay the amenity fee, or perhaps it can be negotiated with the hotel?

Is there a website that shows this kind of information? Hilton hotel in Oahu didn’t charge resort fees when I redeemed a free night certificate but Marriott hotel in Oahu did.

Hyatt and Hilton don’t charge resort fees on award nights. Marriott and IHG do.

I went to Aruba IHG Holiday inn resort last September and didn’t pay any extra fees at all. Booked all with points. In fact I got two rooms along with P2 total of 5 people. 2 in one room and 4 in another. No extra fees.

No amenity fees on points bookings here in Japan on IHG, Hilton, nor Hyatt

Also, free cancellation at any time. Of course it will use your points but if you have any trips in mind do it.

You can cancel and rebook at the lower rates if you have upcoming travel with them. I just did that for a trip in two weeks.
