The Dupage Credit Union offers the Visa Platinum Credit Card. Let’s see if applying for this card makes sense in this honest review.
Card Basics
- Sign up bonus of 10,000 points after $3,000 in spend within the first 90 days
- No annual fee
- The card earns at the following rates:
- 5x points for charitable donations
- 2x points on gas stations and restaurants
- 1x point on all other purchases
- 0% introductory APR for 12 months on purchases made within first 90 days
- 0% introductory APR for 12 months on balances transferred within first 12 months (3% balance transfer fee). Also earn an additional 1x point per $1 transferred (minimum $1,500)
- 2,500 points for referring a friend to credit union (extra 1,000 if they get a card)
How Much Are Points Worth?
This is always the big question when a card earns points instead of cash back. It states the following:
earn a bonus 10,000 Choice Rewards Points redeemable up to $100 in cash-back rewards!
I’d assume this means points are worth 1¢ each when redeeming for a statement credit.
Eligibility Requirements
You must live or work in one of the following counties to be eligible:
- DuPage
- DeKalb
- Kane
- Kendall
- Lake
- McHenry
- Will
Or be part of one of the select employer groups.
Our Verdict
U.S. Bank FlexPerks is the best option for charity purchases/donations currently (3x points and points worth up to 2¢). I would jump on a card that earns 5x/5% back on charity purchases in a heartbeat as it would mean I could just donate an extra 5% to charity. 2x at gas stations & restaurants isn’t that attractive as some cards earn at a higher rate on all purchases.
If anybody signs up for this card, let us know if it’s a hard pull to join and also feel free to share your referral details in the comments.
Hat tip to /r/churning
This card still exists (https://www.dupagecu.com/credit-cards/).
There was some discussion on Reddit of a possible loophole to eligibility requirements that involved being a member of a partner credit union (see comment from f4phantom2501 on this page: https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/6fyxvc/dupage_credit_union_giving_5x_on_charitable/)
Anyone have any luck being eligible if not from that area?
Can confirm, it is a hard pull 🙁
Did you get the card? What has your experience been?
Reader /u/f4phantom2501 on reddit pointed out that the CU charges a 4.95$ fee for rewards redemption. This makes it a 4.76x card at best if you spend atleast 2099$/annum on charity and a 1.2x card if you spend atleast 600$/annum on charity. a 5x card such as VantageWest rewards or even a 2% card offers better award rates.
Applied for the credit card using their cc application page while not living/working/studying in that area. Got a call from the bank saying membership must for card approval.
I was sad when it left the Cash+, I was just about to start using it to buy those College Gift Cards and pay my student loans that way. Maybe if I send them an email every month asking for it to come back, they might change their minds.
Flexperks’ charity bonus is disappearing at the end of the year… This really might be the only card to still give a bonus in that category.
Yup
