The Fine Print
- This offer is limited to new personal checking clients (individuals who have not maintained a checking account with First Midwest Bank in the past 90 days) who complete the following required qualifying criteria:1. Open and fund a new Easy, Midwest, or Diamond checking account in branch or online by December 18, 2020. Minimum opening deposit is $100. Account opening subject to First Midwest Bank approval in its sole discretion.
- The account must be opened and funded with new money which is defined as funds not on deposit at First Midwest Bank within the last 90 days.
- Make deposits totaling $2,500 or more within 60 days of account opening. Transfers from other First Midwest deposit accounts do not count as a deposit.
- Make 10 debit card purchases of $25 or more with a First Midwest Mastercard® debit card within 60 days of account opening. ATM withdrawals do not qualify.
- Enroll in e-statements via Online Banking within 60 days of account opening.
- You must download and log into the First Midwest Bank Consumer Mobile banking app and check your account balance within 60 days of account opening. If you do not have the mobile banking app on your mobile device/tablet, simply text iPhone or Android to 57759 from your device and a link to the mobile app will be sent to your phone.
- Once all requirements have been met, a $300 bonus will be issued as a credit to the account approximately 120 calendar days after account opening in branch or online.
- If the account is closed or does not have a balance greater than zero on the day of bonus processing, the $300 credit will not be issued. Promotional credit may be subject to IRS 1099-INT form reporting and may be considered taxable as interest income to you. Consult your tax advisor.
- Offer only available to residents of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Offer may be changed or withdrawn at any time without notice. Limit of one bonus per client, regardless of the number of accounts opened. Offer is not available to existing First Midwest Personal checking clients (either as the primary or joint account holder), accounts that have been closed within the past 6 months, clients who received a promotional bonus in the last 12 months or First Midwest colleagues.
- All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
Avoiding Fees
Monthly Fees
Easy checking account is the easiest to keep fee free. There is a $7.49 monthly fee that is waived if you do any of the following:
- Maintain $100 average daily balance in Checking OR
- make qualifying deposits totalling $100 or more per statement period OR
- be at least 65 years of age
Early Account Termination Fee
Previously account needed to be kept open for six months otherwise you’d forfeit the bonus, but that is no longer in the fine print. Looks like there is an early account termination fee of $25 if closed within 12 months
Our Verdict
Previous bonus was $250, requirements are basically the same except that this time the debit card transactions need to be $25+. That’s worth doing for the extra $50 (plus there is no guarantee that bonus will return). We will add this to our list of the best bank account bonuses.

1099-INT is arriving today
yep we got ours today too Feb 22
Did anyone received an IRS 1099-INT for their $300 bonus?
Not yet
have not either..
I’m getting mine in the mail today
ours just came in the mail yesterday
opened on Nov 23rd still no bonus
Same here, opened 11/16. Called yesterday and they spent about 10 minutes verifying that I met all the criteria. Then the rep comes back and says something about the bonus tried to pay out earlier but couldn’t since my account didn’t have at least $100 balance?!? I was like WTF, my balance has never dropped below $100 and is currently still above $100. Then they spent another 5 minutes looking into it and came back with that I hadn’t received the bonus because my 120 days weren’t up yet (day 115 when I called).
I didn’t have any issues getting this bonus in 2019 (for $250), so I’m not sure why it isn’t auto-posting for some of us. I guess I’ll call again on day 120.
Did you receive your bonus? still no bonus for me, I will send a message to the bank today.
Still nothing. I called again and they submitted a review and promised to call me back in 1-2 business days with their findings.
My bonus just post today…good luck to you!!
Nice! Nothing yet here. They’ll figure it out eventually.
Well I guess they still haven’t figured it out after a couple more phone calls where they promise to look into it and never get back in touch. CFPB to the rescue!
Finally found out why they denied me the bonus. The sneaky bastards changed the waiting period after account closure from 90 days to 6 months and I didn’t catch that change prior to opening another account. Guess I’ll be back in 6 months!
DP:
Opened late november with $100 opening deposit

$300 bonus paid out 100 days after opening in mid March
I’ll leave $100 in there until I close it in December 2021.

Many thanks to all previous DPs
Thanks for the prompt! Just checked and can see my $300 bonus pending.
Applied early November but took weeks to get the account to open. Used Venmo. Also withdrew majority of the $2500 shortly after deposit.
Bonus posted exactly 100 calendar days after opening. Did mobile deposit of a check, as it simply said to deposit $2500. Worked just fine.
did you leave the 2500 in there or did you take it out after depositing?
Bonus posted today.
Cashapp transactions worked.
Opened on 10/27.
I don’t think it has been 120 days but about 100 days.
Same, used Cashapp and opened end of October. Posted 2/5
After depositing $2500 did you leave it in there or did you use part of it for the cash app tx’s ?
Three months later, I still did not get the 300 bonus??!!
Did you read the terms? It is 120 days after opening.
Opted for debit card at account opening, never received one after ~3 weeks, so I called and requested one, now it’s been over 6 weeks since account opening and still not debit card. Looks like they are indeed inept, and no way for me to meet bonus req’s now.
So in the fine print it says this is for Easy, Midwest and Diamond checking accounts. Does this mean that student accounts are excluded from this bonus? I opened my bank account in october and I’ve met all the requirements but I have a student account.
