Korean Air SKYPASS Program Announces Changes For 2020/2021/2022 (Cash & Miles, Revenue Based Earning & New Award Chart)

Korean Airlines has announced a number of changes for the loyalty program ‘SKYPASS’. Changes are as follows:

  • Cash & miles option will be introduced for a test run period from November 2020
  • Mileage accrual and redemption rates based on airfare and flight distance to be implemented from April 2021
  • Four membership levels and lower qualification requirements to be introduced from February 2022

Basically looks like earning miles will go revenue based in April 2021, then in early 2022 redemption will be based on flight distance rather than by region. Difficult to know how bad these changes are without knowing specifics.

RIP cheap redemptions to Hawaii. I’ve been MSing my Skypass card for this sole purpose, so looks like we’ll be vacationing in Hawaii sometime before April 2021…

The articles are saying 2021 but I saw the price increase in 2020 starting about May 1st. First class 80K through April 2020 then May same seat 120K. Not sure why articles are saying 2021.

“More reasonable mileage accrual and redemption rates based on airfare and flight distance to be implemented from April 2021.”

“then in early 2020 redemption will be based on flight distance rather than by region.”

I guess the latter conclusion is wrong?

“Difficult to know how bad these changes are without knowing specifics.” the charts are already there. and unfortunately, for premium cabins this looks pretty bad, e.g. one-way in biz/first NYC-Seoul goes from from 62.5k/80k to 90k/130k! European cities – Seoul go up from 62.5/80 to 80/120k!

revenue-based accrual means no more cheap delta E flights accruing thousands of miles 🙁
