(Payments Sent) Macbook Butterfly Keyboard $50M Class Settlement, Up To $395 Per Person

Macbook Class Settlement

Direct Link to offer | File A Claim

A settlement has been reached with Apple in a class action law lawsuit alleging that certain MacBook laptops sold between 2015-2019 were equipped with defective butterfly keyboards that can result in characters repeating unexpectedly; letters or characters not appearing; and/or the keys feeling “sticky” or not responding in a consistent manner.

Who Is Eligible?

The Settlement Class includes anyone in the United States who purchased (not for resale) an Apple MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro laptop between 2015 and 2019 that was equipped with a butterfly keyboard mechanism.

The Settlement provides for a $50 million fund for payments to Settlement Class Members who had the “Butterfly” keyboard on their MacBook laptop repaired. The two repair procedures covered by the Settlement are: (1) a Topcase Replacement, which involves replacing the entire keyboard module; and (2) a Keycap Replacement, which involves replacement of one or more keycaps.

  • If Apple’s records reflect you received two Topcase Replacements, you are a Group 1 Settlement Class Member.
  • If you received a single Topcase Replacement or one or more Keycap Replacements, and you declare that the repair did not resolve your keyboard issues, you are a Group 2 or Group 3 Settlement Class Member.

The amount of the settlement payment varies depending on whether you are a Group 1, Group 2, or Group 3 Settlement Class Member.

How Much?

  • Group 1 can receive $300 – $395.
  • Group 2 can receive up to $125.
  • Group 3 can receive up to $50.

The actual amounts will vary based on the number of claimants.

Important Dates

  • March 6, 2023 is the deadline to file
  • 2015 – 2019 are years which some MacBooks were affected

Our Verdict

There’s potential for some real money back here. I have some friends who always bemoaned the Apple butterfly keyboard issues, hopefully they’ll get some reimbursement now with this settlement.

Just received $395! Much better than the usual $3.95 you get from class actions.

The article says you had to apply by March 2023 – is that accurate? I had this problem too, and had them replace the keyboard once, but gave up when that still didn’t fix the problem.

Got my $395 check on Saturday. Had totally forgotten about the class action, but definitely a welcome surprise

Got $125. Damn I should have gone for the 2nd Topcase Replacements after the 1st replacement did not work super well after a while but just tolerated it.

As someone who owned MBA’s for 10 years+, my problem is the keyboard impression left on the screen when you close the laptop. I thought this litigation took care of this problem but I went into Apple yesterday with my new M3 and was told they did not fix the issue and it was a problem I was going to have to deal with. YMMV.

I submitted for P2s I bought replacement caps off eBay and did the repair myself. Hopefully it counts.

Same for me. I’ve bought a replacement on Amazon and replaced it by myself. But, according to the website, seems like we’re not eligible:

“Settlement payments are only available to Settlement Class Members who received repairs performed by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The Settlement does not provide reimbursement for any other out of pocket expenses.”

Email showed up in my protonmail spam inbox. I did a battery replacement which include replacing the keyboard to a lightly newer version (and topcase?) as well. I assume that’s why I got the email. But looks like I’m not really eligible

update: nvm, logged in with unique ID and PIN it says “You are in Group 4 Apple’s records do not reflect that you had either a Topcase or Keycap Replacement.”
