Many Visa Cards Losing Benefits Beginning February 2021 (Extended Warranty, Auto Rental Insurance, Purchase Protection)

Many banks who issue Visa credit cards have been sending out notices to their cardholders about an impending change in benefits beginning February 1, 2021 which will result in the termination of the following card benefits:

Not all cards are affected, e.g. premium cards typically have special benefits packages which won’t necessarily be affected. But many of the standard cards are getting these notices, such as:

  • U.S. Bank various cards
  • Elan cards
  • Rakuten Visa card
  • Synchrony cards
  • Comenity cards
  • Bank of America Cash Rewards (auto rental benefit being removed)
  • Let us know which others you got notifications on

Be careful which card you use for shopping and car rentals that need added protections.

  • Effective 4.1.21 - Fidelity (ELAN) Visa dropping Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver and Warranty Manager Service, per my just arrived statement ...urgh.

    Are loosing too.
Both are giving some norton shield in replacement. I have not explored what norton does though.

  • I wonder why the flood to decrease benefits. I wonder if it's because points/% cash back have been steadily rising? I assumed that was because of the increase in interchange fees. The side perks are really some of the biggest benefits of using these cards.

  • Which card is best for roadside assistance? Visa roadside used to charge $60 per assistance some years ago.

    • I'm sure others have it, but I used the BofA Premium Rewards Card a few weeks back to winch a car out of a ditch. It cost a flat fee of $70. It sounds like what you're talking about but it went up $10.

  • Is there a good resource that shows cards and what benefits they provide? I'd like to know which card to tag in my wallet for car rentals as that auto insurance is key.

      • this would be an excellent crowdsource opportunity one would think, by DOC or reddit people (or both). I'd volunteer time for example.

      • Looks like it is out of date based on the fact that I don't believe Chase offers Price Protection on their Freedom cards anymore for some time now. Would be good if the website owner put a date somewhere on the website when the list was last updated. Good website though (but needs to be updated more regularly and add more cards and then I can see a lot of people using it)

  • This article should be updated. My Citi Mastercard dropped auto rental coverage in mid-2019. I received no notification (email, letter) about it...
"As of September 22, 2019, buying with most Citi cards will no longer cover car rental insurance, trip cancellation insurance, worldwide accident insurance, delay protection, baggage delay protection, and medical evacuation assistance, along with several other non-travel benefits."

  • First National Bank of Omaha FNBO has discontinued all benefits mentioned in this article on their Visa cards. Just got the notice in the mail.
