Marriott Confirms Elite Status From Linking/Status Match Won’t Carry Over

In our post on potential opportunities due to the Marriott/SPG merger we discussed possibly of getting Platinum status after the merger “If you currently have gold status with Marriott, you will receive Platinum elite status in August. If you currently have SPG Gold status you will receive Marriott Gold status in August. The thing is that if you’re currently SPG gold and you link your accounts you’ll automatically receive Marriott gold status and that should convert to Platinum status come August.”

I was weary on this based on the fact that a Marriott senior vice president had stated: ““… For members who have matched, they will be getting then the Gold Status, which is really more equivalent to the SPG Gold …”. It looks like we now have confirmation this won’t work as Marriott has sent out an e-mail about status stating:

Elite tier will be based on the status earned, not status granted via linking and status matching

I am of the opinion that the status match from SPG Gold to Marriott will work. I received an email from Marriott stating that after August, my Gold Elite status with Marriott will become Platinum Elite. This contradicts what the Marriott SVP states. Hey Doctor, are you saying that the email that Marriott sent will not come to be?

Love your site.

So just to confirm; I have 30 marriott nights and 10 spg nights….so unless I plan on getting 20 more nights with marriott, or 15 with spg, it won’t matter? I don’t have “40 combined nights” right now, and nights are treated separately with the merger per this post for the purpose of obtaining status, right? Thanks!

Per OMAAT, it appears Plat Free breakfast is not happening as expected, either

I’m confused. So I have SPG Gold from Amex Plat today, not from stays or spend. My “linked” status today is Gold. So… are we saying Marriott won’t honor this come August and I’ll lose my status completely or get silver I guess?

Yeah I am in the same situation. This article is poorly written. I can’ t make heads or tails of it.

Now will Elite Status From Linking/Status Match count as years of elite status when calculating lifetime status eligibility? If yes I’ve got 8 years. If not it’s maybe 5.

I have no idea what this article is trying to say.

Yes but you need to finish the Plat Challenge before end of July regardless how the 3 months start.

Need to become Plat before Aug 1st in order to map to Plat Premiere. Else you would still be Plat, the old Gold.

Am currently in a Challenge – just finished 1st stay on Monday and have next 4 stays booked. Have 2 more to book till Jul 1st. I should be done by 2nd week of Jul.

So if I was to get the RItz card and get Marriott Gold status this month, could I then try to do a Plat challenge as well, and stay a bunch of days before July 31 to get Plat for next year under new program?

Does anyone know how long you get the new status for when they combine nights? Is this new combination status only good until the end of 2018 or would it be good through 2019, the same as how it currently works?

I’m trying to figure out whether it makes sense to hold off on upgrading to the Marriott Plus for one final 15 night credit before the end of the year, in an attempt at getting Platinum Premier Elite, or to upgrade now for the better free night. The main benefit seems like the 5 bonus suite night awards (or other gift, but I don’t know if they’ve mentioned what that might be yet).

Not sure I could use 10 suite night certificates in a year, though. The better free night might win out. I saw mention of a possible free night instead of the 5 bonus certificates, though? If that’s the case, it could be a wash.

Sitting on two SPG Gold accounts through 2019 after spending 60k (30k per account). We were going to book 4 nights at a full service Marriott but went with a Hyatt that offered breakfast included due to this change. We earned the status early this year in hopes the benefits would stay the same at least until our status expired, sucks they’ve chosen to not honor it at least through the end of the year.

Wary, not weary. Perhaps you were weary when proofing.

Or perhaps leery? Combined the two?

Love it, too!
