Marriott To Be Fined £99.2 million (~$123.6USD million) For SPG Data Breach

Yesterday it was announced that UK Information Commissioner’s Office had issued a notice of intent to fine British Airways £183.4 million ($229.5USD million) for a data breach. Today UK Information Commissioner’s Office issued another notice of intent, this time they plan to fine Marriott £99.2 million (~$123.6USD million) for the SPG data breach.

It’s good to finally see companies being held to account for these types of data breaches. That being said the fines haven’t been paid yet and the ICO is giving both companies the opportunity to make representations to the proposed findings and the sanction imposed.

For Marriott such amount is a rounding error, not even a slap on the wrist.

Marriott and Boeing deserve such. But it has nothing to do with any specific country

Well, firms got punished, EU governments benefited, but not consumers or other countries
