Maximizing The American Express Platinum $179 CLEAR Credit

Both the American Express Personal & Business Platinum cards now come with a $179 annual CLEAR credit. A full price CLEAR membership costs $179 annually so most would just pay for that and be on their way, but you can actually maximize this further as the credit can be used for anybody not just the cardholder.

I suspect a lot of readers will have a elite status that will get them a $119 membership, they could then add a family member for $60 meaning both would have CLEAR access for $179 (and that $179 would be refunded via this credit) for no out of pocket cost.

United MPX app has a banner saying you get 5,000 miles for signing up for CLEAR. Not sure if it’s a targeted offer. A couple other people mentioned it on reddit.

I have email from Delta today offering a “Seattle Special” of 2 months free CLEAR. After the 2 months membership will renew at $119/year … but I don’t know whether I can effectively combine this with the Amex benefit since I would like to get the Amex credit for me and my wife by paying $119 + $60 – hard to imagine there will be an easy way to specify that when I sign up for the Delta free trial. Thoughts?

Super strange – according to maxrewards this offer has been added to my gold card. However, I do not see it on the amex website. I chatted with customer care and they confirmed that the offer has been added to my gold card.

I found that if I have >100 AmEx offers added i no longer see some of them at all. Maybe same thing happened to you.

https://www.clearme.com/partner/lincoln gives you 6 months free including family members.

So if you add a family member before the free trial expired I believe the charge will be 110+60 if you ask customer care to reprice it with the United promo? Haven’t verified but could potentially work with any other free trial promo.

Successful reimbursement for adding a family account with United portal purchase. There are two transactions. One for 119 and the other is 60. All reimbursed for total 179

I got it + 1 family member, but my Amex has only been charged with the $119 fee, not the additional $60 fee, even though my clear account shows a seperate invoice for the $60. Wonder when the second charge will hit.

If I sign up using the Delta deal and add my spouse for $50, does it post as a single charge? Trying to figure out if I can include my spouse in the new Amex offer, which is only for a single charge up to $179.

Some reports on a different post suggest that adding a spouse creates a 2nd charge, so may not be reimbursed with this deal.

That would be disappointing. I’m not going to sign up until October, so I have time to wait and see what others report. I’m not going to add my spouse if the charges are separate and not covered by the offer, but the worst case scenario would be AMEX reimbursing the $50 charge and not the $119.

I just got reimbursed through the Platinum credit for two separate charges ($119 and $60), so it does work in accordance with their ToCs. The AMEX Offer specifically states “one” time credit, so that would probably not work.

I got an AmEx offer on my Gold card this morning for “100% back on a single purchase up to $179.” So they’re effectively adding the same benefit on one-time basis (so far) to the Gold card, albeit with an expiration date. AmEx must have gotten quite a sweet deal with CLEAR if they are giving these away left and right. I now have a surplus of the credits between 2 Plats and 1 Gold, while my own membership gained through the Green card doesn’t expire for nearly a year.

Anyone know of a way to view family members on your account? I added my wife and son, didn’t see any emails, confirmation, or pending charge (for the wife).
