The American Express Platinum personal card comes with an annual benefit of up to $120 in Uber One credits. You don’t need to activate anything on the AmEx end – just sign up for Uber One using your Amex Platinum card and get a statement credit to cover up to $120 in charges. This benefit renews each calendar year on January 1st.
Uber One costs $9.99/month or $96/year.
People often keep the Platinum card for 12-13 months and then cancel to avoid the second year of a massive $895 annual fee. If you sign up for the Uber One annual membership immediately after getting the card, you should be able to squeeze in a second year of free Uber One after the card anniversary and before the card cancellation. But if you sign up for Uber One weeks later you might not be able to get the second year.
Back up plan: If you didn’t sign up immediately, the best approach would usually be to sign up for the monthly plan through February of the coming year. Then switch to the annual plan in March of the coming year. You’ll get all the $9.99 charges from the first calendar year reimbursed. And you’ll get the two $9.99 charges (Jan-Feb) and the one $96 charge (March) from the second calendar year reimbursed. Hopefully this makes sense.
I just messed up on this by not signing up for Uber One on my Platinum card for a number of weeks and so I thought this was worth a headsup.
