Upside Review
Using the app is fairly easy:
- Open the app
- Select an offer (the screen shows you both the price per gallon and the discount)
- Pay with your regular credit card and take a picture of your receipt
- Upload picture to Upside
Within a day or so of uploading the receipt, you’ll see the cash back available in your Upside account. You can cash out via check or Paypal. Check payments have a $5 minimum while Paypal cash out has no minimum. I was able to cash out a small ~$1 balance without a hitch.
Upside Credit
Aside from cash back on gas purchases at these gas stations, Upside also gives you a credit toward future purchases at the gas station location. These Upside Credits are more generous than the actual cash back discount, BUT they are much more restrictive in use and can be used only for specific items or services at the gas station. You might be able to use the credit for an oil change, for example.
The app will dictate on which goods or services the Credit can be used. After purchasing the specific item, you’ll upload a receipt of that purchase and then the Upside Credit will turn into real cash back via Paypal or a check.
A recent purchase of mine at a Sunoco gas station got me 8¢ cash back per gallon on around 6-gallon purchase for a total of $.48 back, plus I got 25¢ per gallon in Upside Credit for a total Credit of $1.50. The app gives me two options for using up the $1.50 credit: 1) get the $1.50 back as a rebate on an oil change, 2) purchase goods at the gas station convenience store and get 20% off the purchase by submitting the receipt. (Tobacco and gift cards are excluded.)
Pay careful attention to the cash back numbers you see in the app: the standard earnings are literally cash back, but the Upside Credit earnings have much more limited use, as noted.
Final Thoughts
Uploading receipts is always a pain. In this case, if you use a lot of gas and have a big tank, it could be worthwhile to use the app and get a couple dollars off each fill up. If you are able to easily use up the Upside Credit too (e.g. you regularly buy food items or do oil changes at your local gas station), the value proposal is much more.
They also have a business facing website that’s quite interesting if you’re into reading about their business model.
If you live in one of the participating states, I’d love to hear your feedback about the app in the comments. Is it worth the download or is it mostly just overpriced stations offering non competitive discounts?

The post clearly states: ‘Please do not share your referral codes in this post. Instead use this linked post.’ DO NOT POST YOUR REFERRALS BELOW OR YOU WILL BE BANNED.
Do referral codes stack with promo codes?
Yes. You can enter one referral code, and as many promo codes that come out (with some slight exceptions – some promo codes are new customers only). The app will tell you that the code is invalid if it is not allowed once you try to enter it.
I tried posting it on the referral thread but it’s not showing. I posted the link only. When I try to resubmit it it says duplicate comment detected, so of course I cancelled that submission, yet my original comment isn’t showing, at least on my end. Can you (or anyone) confirm it’s there? Don’t want to repost and it show double. Thanks.
Your comment is showing.
Can I post an e-mail address for people to contact me for a referral code?
wouldn’t this be simpler: Please do not share your referral codes in this post. Instead use this linked post.
No
Is there a current REFERRAL link?

Gave up on this app after it rejected several gas puchases in a row despite providing a receipt. Not worth the time and effort.
I don’t have a offer I can click in, but I have a banner at the top of my app (android) that says “You have an extra $7 bonus on your next purchase.” I can’t click into it to see anything about terms and it doesn’t show up when I click on restaurants, but I imagine it’s the same offer.
I no longer use the app because I no longer get gas offers. All of it is food now.
I couldn’t find the offer on my or P2’s account. However…I did find 28% cash back at the Panara a couple miles from us. I get offers via email from Panara on a regular basis. I’ll have to check and see which ones I can stack with this offer. Thanks for the heads up. Have a blessed rest of your day!!
So how do you know that’s not just a targeted offer which was sent to that one user, or to a very small subset of users?
That’s the danger in taking an offer which someone got through an email and assuming that it applies to most everyone.
I’m not that familiar with how Upside handles emails it sends, but most other comparable organizations send emails with targeted offers, not just general offers.
At the very least, when you take an offer that one person got through email only, if you post it somewhere else, you should mention that you only know of one person getting that offer through an email. People shouldn’t have to click on the link just to figure that out.
Definitely need to check that you are seeing the offer too. I’ll clarify in the post, thx
I don’t currently use the Upside app, because I bigger discounts (up to $1 off per gallon) using my Kroger store (Ralphs) fuel points at Shell stations which the Upside app doesn’t cover. In my area, Upside is very specific about which gas stations they cover, and they’re not the gas stations which I use, and only a small fraction of the gas stations in the Southern California area, and never the low-priced stations either.
I don’t know whether it has better coverage in other areas, but not in my Southern California area.
However, I just downloaded the Upside app just now, but not for gas station, but because it now also offers cashback at some restaurants that I frequent.
Is the 30% cash back a targeted offer? I am not seeing it on my Upside. Does a coupon or promo code need to be entered?
I did receive an email regarding the 30% bonus (no mention of code), but I don’t see any sort of banner in the app; I assume it’s already added to the display rate, for ex., last time I checked the rate for TCBY was x%; now it’s showing 3x%.
is upside still working? any working codes?
Has anyone lost cash rewards due to inactivity? After how long? What defines activity? i amnot getting any helpful answers thru the upside AI bot.
Referral Not working for me.
I sometimes get 10-17 cents per gallon, but even that’s only 30% of the time.
I gave up. Waste of time
Never applied any promo code
That’s the amount off for a referral so that might be it.
Upside is now not letting users add a promo code after creating an account and first using a referral code. 🙁
Edit: they changed the layout of the app and now have to click on the gear icon to enter promo code.

“Cannot be applied.”
Saw “PROMO25” and “MOON25” being circulated online but neither worked for me or my P2. Likely only good for newcomers.
