The Fine Print

  • $100 minimum balance required to open checking account.
  • To qualify for $100 offer, account holder must set up an Automatic Payment or Direct Deposit and make a total of 5 SPIRE debit card transactions within 60 days.
  • Account must remain open for six months.
  • $100 will be deposited to the checking account upon account opening.
  • If all requirements of offer are not met, SPIRE reserves the right to reclaim the $100.
  • Account holder responsible for any applicable taxes.
  • Limited time offer valid 10.01.16 – 12.31.16. Subject to termination at any time.

Avoiding Fees

This is a free checking account, you do need to keep the account open for six months to avoid any fees.

Our Verdict

    Applied 3/25. Approved 3/27. Did get a phone call about why I've opened so many accounts recently.

    Bonus posted 3/27. Debit card arrived 4/3 (had to request -- i get the impression they may not enforce the 6 transaction requirement given you have to opt into a debit card but bonus already posted).

    Let an employer DD hit 3/31 and ran 6 transactions against debit card.

    Go for it! I was reluctant for a while.

  • Pro tip: you can double dip the $100 bonus with the St Paul Saints checking so you get $100 plus two free tickets to the Saints. When you ask for the promo, tell them you want to do the Saints account and ask if you can get the tickets too. Because of the pandemic there will not be Saints games this summer, but I imagine you can use the voucher next year.

  • Did this bonus today and came home with a 150$ cash, i did the auto loan bonus refinance offer which they gave 50$ for because they couldn't beat my current APR.

    The downside to what you’re saying is it takes a toll on your 5/24 status while the checking does not. I agree it’s a lower checking bonus than others, but would definitely rather HP for a checking than a new CC at this point because I’m close to getting out of 5/24 hell, just in time for the new SouthWest “Premium Card”.
