Small update: If you purchased your annual pass through Costco your membership plan is not being limited to three movies per month. Seems odd to punish people who purchased directly through MoviePass rather than via Costco but I guess Costco is providing full refunds for anybody that cancels and is holding MoviePass funds in escrow/threatening legal action for changed/cancelled plans. If you want to request a refund the URL is:Â https://moviepass.com/refund/thankyou/
MoviePass has announced that even if you’ve paid for an annual plan, that plan would no longer be grandfathered into being able to see unlimited movies monthly. Existing annual pass holders have two options:
- You can request to receive a refund by August 31st. This will be prorated based on how long you’ve had the pass for
- You can continue to use your pass, you’ll be limited to three movies per month. You also receive a discount of $5 on additional ticket purchases
If you don’t request a refund by August 31st, it’s assumed you want to continue your membership and option #2 is automatically selected for you. If you do opt to take the refund, MoviePass is also preventing you from signing up for a new account for 9 months. MoviePass provided the following statements:
As of today, aligned with Section 2.4 of our Terms of Use, your annual subscription plan will now allow you to see 3 movies a month instead of the previous unlimited offering, and you’ll receive up to a $5.00 discount on any additional movie tickets purchased. This is the current standard plan now in effect for all current and new subscribers. Unless you choose to cancel your subscription prematurely, your plan will continue within these guidelines through the end of your annnual contract.
And
This new offering is part of the transition to our new subscription model. We’re excited to offer subscribers the option of going to three movies a month for $9.95 and providing up to a $5.00 discount for additional movie tickets. We are grateful to our MoviePass community and have offered a number of our annual subscribers the option for a refund if the new plan doesn’t align with their viewing preferences. With this transition, we intend to offer more film options so subscribers can continue exploring a wide variety of movies. We believe that our new plan is a positive change in the right direction and that it captures the needs and desires of most of our MoviePass community in our journey for an accessible and quality movie experience. Our Verdict
If you purchased your annual pass from Costco, it might be worth contacting them directly as they were offering full refunds (at least until recently). Personally I think Sinemia is a better option at this stage, another option is AMC Stubs A-List. The whole if you cancel we won’t let you have another account for nine months just seems petty to be and particularly pathetic given that MoviePass are the ones forcing the change.
I’m so ticked with them. I requested a refund (annual subscriber) BEFORE 8/31 and I never got my money back. What are you even supposed to do when that happens?
Ordered one annual MoviePass subscription for myself, and one for my father, through Costco back in 12/2017. Just called today to inquire about refunds, and was told they’d be able to refund of half the purchase price ($45 each / $90 total). Received an email confirming refunds from Costco.
Have not contacted MoviePass about requesting a refund, nor have I cancelled my membership through MoviePass (unsure if Costco will cancel on my behalf or not, but I don’t plan on trying to continue using it).
Apparently, it’s not only Costco accounts that are not affected. I have yet to receive any communication regarding change in my terms – and when I tried to use that link, I received a message that my account wasn’t eligible. So, looks like I’m fine until my annual membership expires.
I purchased the $89 plan directly from Moviepass at the end of March 2018. When trying the refund URL. I received “Your login credentials did not match an eligible account”, I changed my password (maybe that was the issue), but still got the same message. I then contacted Moviepass via in app chat. They said I was not eligible for a refund and my (annual unlimited) plan would not change. When I pressed and requested that information via email – then I got a “after reviewing our model, we feel that a 3 movie a month plan would align with customers needs” but we understand if you would like a prorated refund. I wanted to know the amount (it should be 8 months), but the support person could not determine that and assured me that I would get an email from Moviepass………… need to get an answer before 8/31
William Charles It say: “Small update: If you purchased your annual pass through Costco your membership plan is not being limited to three movies per week.”
But it should say …per month.
Thanks, fixed.
In the app, my annual subscription’s next billing date is 12/4/18 (it shows as Annual $89.95 under type of plan). This means my current billing period ends 9/3, correct? If I’ve already seen three movies from 8/4 to present, am I shut out until the next month’s cycle starts? Or can I see three movies from today to 9/3, in other words, three movies from the time I receive the email?
I haven’t received the email that everyone is referencing, but I assume I’ll get it soon.
They changed the terms from July 27, so I guess in your case if you didn’t get your moviepass from costco, you already limited to 3 and will reset on 9/3.
When I received the email and updated the app (android) they now show 1 movie in the period, so was able to only watch 2. But it should reset tomorrow or Tuesday.
tried to ask for a refund but it says my credentials aren’t working even though I’m 100% sure they are correct. i just sent a support ticket
Here’s my data point. Called Costco today for a refund and they asked if I’ve activated the membership. I replied yes and they offered $45 refund for all 3 memberships. To me that’s more than fair as I’ve been using it for about 4 months.
The URL to request the refund is http://moviepass.com/refund/thankyou
Thanks, added to post.
I have an annual plan and never received an email, what should I do to get a refund? (My plan was directly through moviepass (via Paypal) not Costco)
Same here. I’m going to email them.
