Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders have been able to earn three Chase Ultimate Rewards points per $1 spent on purchases made through United MileagePlus X (MPX) with merchants that would normally earn 3x. Likewise Chase Ink Plus cardholders have been able to earn 5x on categories that would normally earn 5x (e.g office supply stores). This has been a popular option since MPX stopped earning 5x on the American Express Platinum card. Sadly Chase cards are no longer earning these 3x/5x. We will update the payments workshop to reflect this.
Hat tip to readers LeoM, Chris W
Was getting 3X on my MPX Starbucks GC purchases as of 9/25. Just made a MPX Starbucks GC purchase on 10/6 and only got 1X. Are we back to square 1X with Chase again?
This looks like it might be turning again, bought Bertucci’s gc through MPX and it didn’t code as restaurant.
August 13 Bubba Gump MPX transaction coded as 3X with CSR.
Thanks, I’ll add that to Payments Workshop.
May 27 IHOP MPX transaction coded at 3X with Chase Sapphire Reserve
Wasn’t sure where else to post this, but I gave MPX another try with my CSR and it gave 3x points:

Thanks! was looking for newer DPs. I guess MPX finally fixed their code?
If anyone has DPs on other restaurants, etc, please let us know.
I can add a data point to the pool. Citi credit cards no longer coding MPX as travel. I have the Premier & Prestige and using the Premier since it earns 3x on taxi/ubers. Prior to the change the transaction would code as “MPX*Uber” and SIC: taxi/travel; count towards my 3x category. Now the transactions codes as the following SIC: “Misc/Special Retail Stores”; which is a 1x category. The value of the TY point is worth more to me than UA miles. No more MPX for Uber gift cards…
Slightly off-topic: I tried to use MPX tonight and it gives me an error of “system is disabled” Anyone else having this problem?
Same here. My MPX app shows “We apologize for the inconvenience. We’ll be back up shortly.”
So, if you use MPX on restaurants, your CSR will still code it as 1x UR point? That’s so lame.
That has been a case for more than 2 weeks now. I believe they’ve fixed it at the same time as people started to blame Amex RATs for killing MPE. It looks like AMEX has nothing to do with that
RIP AirBnb triple dip 🙁
the cashbacks websites are better to use anyway like mr rebates like staples gives 6 percent on many days. and
On March 15th I got 3x for Starbucks on MPX with the CSR. Can try to reload my and see if it posts 3x.
Please let us know. Could be the change occurred after the 15th.
I did a Starbucks reload on Monday and can confirm that it’s now down to 1x UR points.
I think it started on the 16th
My March 29th @ Starbucks using MPX did get 1x. So I did what I normally do, which is send a message thru Chase to see if they would fix it. I normally did use MPX bi weekly for the past few years to refill my starbucks card so I mentioned it in my letter that i did not receive 3x points around this time. Here is their reply.
Hello Fresh,
I will be happy to review your inquiry about the rewards
for your account.
I value you using our card for all your credit needs. I
see you have processed your transaction at MPX*Starbucks
Card. Let me share, different kiosks are assigned
different category codes. The category code for the kiosk
used by you has the merchant description of Miscellaneous
and Specialty Retail Stores. The rewards adjustment you
requested cannot be made because the merchant is not in an
eligible category.
Fresh, Visa and MasterCard systems assign a category
code to each merchant, based on the kinds of products and
services they sell. Sometimes the system places merchants
in a generalized category, like “superstores” instead of
“grocery stores” or “gas stations.” Since the merchant in
question was not assigned an appropriate category, your
purchases did not qualify for this reward.
We appreciate your business and thank you for being a
Chase customer.
Thank you,
Terry
