3/1/19: Offer is back through September 3rd. Hat tip pandykolvas

The Offer

Direct Link to offer

  • Signup for the Navy Federal Flagship Rewards Visa Signature card and get 50,000 points after spending $4,000 within 90 days.

It comes as part of a (previously announced) revamp on the card, going into effect today, which adds a 3x category on travel, retains the 2x everywhere else, and now offers a set $.01 value on points when redeemed for cash.

Card Details

  • $49 annual fee, waived the first year
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • 3x on all travel purchases which includes many leisure/entertainment categories too (includes: airline and train tickets, hotel stays, car rentals, travel agencies, cruises, campgrounds, RV parks, timeshares, tourist attractions, boat rentals, airports, motor home rentals, ride-sharing services, bridges, tolls, ferries, parking, bus lines, limos, taxis commuter transport, public golf courses, aquariums, amusement parks)
  • 2x everywhere else, no maximum
  • Statement credit of $100 for Global Entry or $85 for TSA Precheck once every 4 years
  • Points are worth $.01 per point to redeem as cashback, all other redemptions have the same value as well
  • Standard Visa Signature benefits and other benefits

Our Verdict

Nice signup offer here, and a pretty good overall card too. Points are now worth 1 cent each making this bonus valued at $500. Previously, there have been targeted 40k signup offers on this card and public 30k offers, I believe.

Navy Federal is only available for military and veterans – full eligibility information can be found here (plus family members. Even if they are deceased). Keep in mind that joining NFCU is a hard pull, it’s possible you’ll land up with two hard pulls if you join and signup for the card, but hopefully those will be combined. Learn more about Navy Federal credit cards in the post Navy Federal Credit Union (NFCU) Credit Cards: List, Best Cards & Things You Must Know.

Note: Plastiq does not earn rewards with NFCU cards and won’t trigger the spend requirement.

Zero stars for Value & Service Quality. Not worth $49 annually. Take the sign up $$$ and cancel the account. NFCU Flagship is an easy card to get with high CL, but there is no flexibility with this card. Where all major creditors such as Citi, Chase, AmEX are providing incentives to use their travel cards, NFCU is reviewing their options to do so. Come on, its JULY 2020 you can’t travel, so why not build in some type of incentive such as Groceries, Home Improvement, or waive the annual fee vice travel points. They will tell you none of these options exist if you call or write them. At this stage, its not worth $49.00. Member 37 years.

fyi checking account fundings do not count towards min spend requirements. I learned this the hard way after opening several new checking accounts and funding with this card. After achieving $4k spend, I sent a SM asking where my rewards were, and they totaled up only my organic spend (not bank account funding amounts) as the “qualified” spend towards the $4k requirement.

Relevant update from past consensus here:

1. The bonus posted immediately today after $4000 spend, less than 1 month after opening. Whereas everyone here says it takes 4+ months. Improvement!!

2. Venmo for the entire thing was no issue. Couch MS for these trying times.

3. Fee not waived.

Anyone know if they care if you just buy from GCM to meet MSR?

The NFCU More Rewards card (aka NFCU Amex) also has a new 25,000 point signup bonus. I think this is a lower amount than it had last year. The NFCU cashRewards card also has a new signup bonus of $150.

Anyone know if you can pay taxes (paytaxusa or similar) to meet the MSR (will they count towards MSR, since plastiq won’t)?

Bob Roberts Did you end up trying this? Did it count for rewards on the NFCU card?

So I’ve changed my (fake) name but still rocking the orange hair. I chickened out on trying taxes since I didn’t want to waste the spend. I ended up ordering from giftcards.com and that paid out 🤷‍♂️

Ended up getting shutdown by Navy Fed two years later due to sending them Western Union payments (doh!)
