Update 11/22/21: Deal has been extended until December 31, 2021.
Update 11/11/21: You can now access Spiral on the Spiral website rather than it being iOS only. All the sign up links are still to the app store, but you can click login and then ‘I Don’t Have An Account’. I assume this will work for the bonuses as well, but needs to be confirmed. Hat tip to JesC
Update 10/21/21: There is now an additional $200 bonus when you set up a direct deposit. I assume it can be stacked with the $50 offer as well. Hat tip to reader JesC

The Offer
- Neobank Spiral is offering a bonus of up to $50 when you open a new checking account. The bonus depends on your deposit:
- Make a single deposit $100+ and get $25 bonus
- Make a single deposit $200+ and get $50
- Get $200 when you set up recurring direct deposits of at least $1,500 each month for two consecutive months within 60 days of the end of the promotion and make 10 purchases totaling $500 or more using your Spiral VisaⓇ Debit Card
The Fine Print
- Offer valid from September 20, 2021, through November 30, 2021, and is available when you have an existing Spiral consumer checking account and have never made a deposit or had a credit to the checking account before September 20, 2021 or for any new customer who opens a checking account on or after September 20, 2021.
- Offer is not available to customers who have previously made a deposit to their Spiral checking account (excluding micro-deposits to verify external accounts), customers who made a deposit to their checking account in any amount but currently have a zero or negative balance, or customers who received a bonus on a previous checking account at any time.
- To qualify for the $25 checking bonus, checking customers must have an unfunded Spiral checking account (that is, no deposits or credits have been made to the checking account, except for micro-deposits to verify an external account) and make a single $100 deposit on or before November 30, 2021 (cumulative deposits totaling $100 will not qualify for the $25 bonus).
- To qualify for the $50 personal checking bonus, checking customers must have an unfunded Spiral checking account (that is, no deposits or credits have been made to the checking account, except for micro-deposits to verify an external account) and make a single $200 or more deposit on or before November 30, 2021.
- The $25 and $50 offers are not combined if you make a deposit of $200 or more. (cumulative deposits totaling $200 will not qualify for the $25 bonus).
- Once the offer criterion is met, the bonus will be credited to your checking account within 90 days from the date of deposit.
- Checking account must remain open, active, in good standing and in the same product type through the qualifying period to receive the bonus. If the checking account is closed by Spiral, Spiral may deduct the bonus amount from the checking account before the checking account is closed. Spiral may issue you an IRS Form 1099-MISC or other appropriate forms reporting the value of the bonus.
- Offer may be withdrawn at any time and is subject to change. Spiral and nbkc bank employees are not eligible.
- All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
Avoiding Fees
Monthly Fees
This account has no monthly fees to worry about. As long as you make a deposit or withdrawal at least every 90 days. Spiral will charge your account $7 per month (up to 6 months) if you do not make a deposit or withdrawal every 90 days. Interest posting is not considered a deposit for purposes of this fee.
Early Account Termination Fee
Wasn’t able to find the fee schedule so unsure if there is any early account termination fee.
Our Verdict
Spiral has raised $14m, so this seems legit. The $50 bonus is easy to trigger and the $200 direct deposit is generous. Spiral will also match up to $150 donations per year, how much they will match depends on how much you direct deposit into your account (table here). As this is a soft pull we will add this to our list of the best bank account bonuses.

They sent me an email stating that they reviewed my account and decided to close it. Didn’t do anything shady and the last transaction was to transfer my small bal to the giving acct before they officially shut down. I think that they closed the acct bc they’re shutting down, but I don’t like the way that they worded the email and made it seem as if I did something wrong.
“We have recently reviewed your account and as a result, we have decided to close your account. Pursuant to the Deposit Account Agreement, provided to you when your account was opened, either you or the Bank has the right to close your account at any time. We have chosen to exercise this right and your account is now closed…”
They will close everyone’s account by Dec 31.
After reading some of the old posts here for people who got bonuses in 2021and 1099-MISC forms in 2022, I am a bit surprised.
Did Spiral only report the $5.00 but not the $200+$50 bonuses on the 1099-MISC ? Seems strange!?
Also, I thought that 1099-MISC were only sent out if the $600 threshold was met?

Looking back, the only 1099 I got from Spiral was a 1099-MISC for $5 – I don’t think the checking account bonus triggered tax reporting. I’ve closed my account so I can’t actually check
Just $5 1099 misc listed in documents under my (still active) account
EDITED TO ADD: there is no minimum for which a 1099 misc cannot be reported, but they MUST issue 1099 misc for $600+
Bingo, which I already mentioned just a few days ago. I can still log in, even though the checking is closed. The 1099-Misc was for $5, even though that is the $5 they gave away to a charity. The normal threshold for Misc is $600, so not sure what they were trying to achieve.
Same for me. I can still login and see the 1099 MISC for $5 though my account was closed a long time ago.
I received the $50 opening deposit bonus in 2022, so I don’t have a tax form that includes it yet.
I received an email from Spiral today saying the 2022 1099-MISC is available. I logged in and see spiral reported $245 as the 2022 1099-MISC (other income).

Good riddance. Had to fight tooth and nail to get them to pay out my $200 bonus earlier this year.
DP for those closing right now: I did the online contact form to close P1 and P2 accounts on 10/4/2022 and I see on 10/6/2022 the pending transfers into my external checking acct of the $8 x2 that was being held captive in the Spiral Giving acct for a few months.
Good riddance, Spiral.
Looks like that’s the policy when closing an account as long as you haven’t donated from the account. From the FAQ:
If you choose not to donate your funds and have never donated from your Giving account, the $5 Giving Bonus awarded to you when opening your Giving account will be forfeited. Any remaining balance in your Giving account greater than $1 will be returned to you by ACH transfer to your linked external account or issued as a check sent to your mailing address on file
AndyJ thanks for posting this. so the $5 bonus is being forfeited? That’s why what they sent me does match with what I had
Didn’t they issue 1099 last year for that $5?
The 1099-Misc I received had the $5 and nothing else. They gave the $5 away to some charity, I assume, and wasn’t worth following up.
No surprise here.. crappy company
None of us readers helped them much with staying a profitable viable business. I suppose this announcement could have saved me some the effort when closing my account a month or two after receiving the bonus. On 2nd thought I would be laying awake at night wondering if they are going to F up getting my money back to me 12/31/22.
Spiral is a scam, they will be investigated very shortly; you can take that to the bank!
Ugh, this sucks. It was nice to have direct deposit and passive-aggressive virtue signaling all wrapped up into one nice package. Guess it’s back to Chase and Facebook for me.
Which Fintech is next?
Albert or hm Bradley
I was thinking Albert or Current….
I hope not Current lol – love that daily interest posting ha
I hope not Albert. It has saved me over $300 on purchases this year so far.
I hope not Current. ☹️
I already paid Albert genius fee lol
I was thinking Albert, current, oxygen and aspiration
Albert just signed it’s own death warrant in August making the cash back deals available only behind a pay wall.
Aspiration is going nowhere. I doubt people are signing up for their paid debit card.
Oh no, who could have seen this coming, oh the humanity, etc.
Zindella rofl. Exactly what I was thinking. Forcing people to donate in the name of social justice, what a brilliant idea!
That was my initial fear, but you could donate to basically any charity of your choosing – animals, people, politics, health, and yes, “social justice.” I donated to UN Watch, which exposes hypocrisy at the once-useful organization.
Dean yeah I did the wounded warriors project. I think they got like $20 between me and my wife (while spiral paid us $500 between the two of us).
