New American Express Platinum Authorized User Offer Requires Annual Fee AU Card

American Express has released a new authorized user offer for the American Express Platinum card and unfortunately there is a negative change. The terms now state:

You will not be eligible to receive this bonus for Companion Platinum Card Members that you may add to your account

There are two types of authorized users that can be added:

  • Additional Platinum card ($195 annual fee)
  • Companion Platinum Card (no annual fee)

So this means you now have to add the card with an annual fee to get this bonus. It’s unclear if this will be the case on all authorized user bonuses on the Platinum card or not, but it’s worth checking for this language if you have an authorized user offer.

Is there a link to this offer anywhere? I’ve been considering adding an AU for the lounge access and this would make that effectively free.

Does this affect Personal Amex Plat card only or will this affect Biz Amex Plat as well?

You’re wrong. It does not give you lounge access.

Oops, I assumed we were talking about the free additional platinum card that you can get with Morgan Stanley Platinum card.

$195 for 20k points, just barely worth it. must be taking a hit on AU spend. I was totally unaware that they charged for each card now.

Got one for 20K points if I add an AU and spend $2k on AU’s card within six months.

10k MR for adding an AU. Downside is that it’s a personal card, so you’d have to deal with Chase recon to exclude the AU if it puts you over 5/24. Usually I just add people who aren’t churning and want the lounge access, but I’ve been rethinking that strategy now that it costs per AU. In the past, you’d pay for the first AU then get two more for free.

It’s 20K points for $2k Spend. But it works only if adding the AU platinum Which does give lounge access, not the no-fee companion card.

I got 20k MR after AU spends $2k in first 6 months. They’re calling the no-fee version a “Companion Platinum” card (verus an “Additional Platinum” card for the one with a fee).

One major negative I see in the T&C: “Offer not available for Additional Card Members who have previously been Additional Card Members on your Account.” That kills it for me, since all the people I would consider adding won’t qualify.

Oh I would do it for 20k MR. I’m only getting the 10k MR offer for now.

Interesting. They messed up P2’s app and added me as additional platinum then they corrected to a companion so I guess they would count that against me.
