Our Verdict
Very good bonus here for those in the area. Even if you aren’t in the above-mentioned counties, it could be worth driving into the closest branch and taking part in this offer. Before driving in, it’s worth verifying that they’ll let you open an account in-branch with the bonus; it has worked in the past.
Here’s how to go about this offer:
- Open the Classic checking account and fund it with $2,500 (or whatever the max is) with a credit card; park $1,000 in the account for a year to keep it fee-free (leave a little more so that you have funds there for the debit card requirement)
- Alternatively, open the Totally Free Checking account to get the 20,000 points offer instead of the $200; 20k points is worth around $160 in gift cards, so you’ll lose a little there but you won’t have to tie up the $1k for a year to keep it fee-free
- Set up a direct deposit; the wording sounds like a single direct deposit will work for this; hopefully, an ACH transfer will work
- Buy 30 $.50 Amazon gift cards (slowly), or use other options to meet the debit card requirement
- After a year, can close the account or you can downgrade it to a fee-free version so that you don’t need to leave any money in it to keep it fee-free

Thanks!
Amazon $.50-.70 x 31 times, worked. I received $200 bonus about 6-7 weeks after I completed these.
Cheers,
PedroNY
Just updating today because I received the remaining $250 (the first $50 posted the day the account was opened). This puts it 73 days after account opening I believe. Thanks for sharing this!
BTW Had to call to waive the first $4.95 fee – most banks usually do that automatically.
Also did 31 transactions (mostly Amazon), finished a week ago. CapOne 360 for DD went through around same time. Still no bonus for either. Contacted UChoose and they said it can take up to 30 days to go through, if nothing contact OceanFirst directly.
Hey so I called today. They confirmed i should be good to go but the other two things won’t post until after 75 days, in my case first week of June. So if it hasn’t been 75 days yet since account was openedbe patient i guess.
Hey Dizzy. So, did the CapOne work as a DD? Would you mind posting what the transaction looked like on the OF site?
Thanks.
Yeah Cap One was no issue. Actually I messed up and missed the cut-off date but they were generous since I completed the # transactions and had sob story about being in the wilderness hiking the Appalachian Trail, I called in and they hooked me up. Not sure if the fact that there’s a branch where I “live” (ie parents’ address).
That’s great, thanks for the info!
I don’t have CapOne so curious what the transaction looked like on the OF site. I was hoping to use Ally, but have yet to see any DPs on DD other than yours.
So far only $50 posted for me. I did 31 debit transactions, it has been about a week since that time, haven’t seen $200 yet.
Anyone have their bonus post besides the $50?
Thanks!
Anyone see what counts for DD? Just getting to that now.
Just want to point out that there is an inactivity fee:
Inactive Account
Applies to checking, savings, and money market accounts
with no activity for prior 6 months. $5 Per month
which can be found here: http://www.oceanfirstonline.com/home/personal/fee
Thanks, never noticed that before
Just wondering if there are any updates on 30 transactions rule? Do all post as ATM withdraw?
I plan to open this one up, just was not sure how much leg work I’ll need to do for 30 transactions.
Thank you,
PedroNY
For me, 50 cent amazon gc worked, but this was a long time ago.
Are you opening an account with this new promo? It has to be over a year since you did the last one, right?
Yeah, I should close it out and try seeing if I can get it again.
Both my online (Amazon) and in-store (Stop&Shop) transactions were showing up as ATM withdrawals even after using as a credit/signature transaction. Called the customer care and they confirmed that the transactions are registering as Credit in their system and will count towards the 30 transactions rule.
