[Update 6/17/19: Some more people are seeing an adjustment now for the $200 AT&T credit, mentioned below. It’s even showing up on some closed cards. (ht r/churning) Also, many people are getting an annual fee refund check which comes from some past Amex mistake, apparently.]
A few reports popped up in the past few days of American Express sending bonus adjustments to those who deserve it or owe it, even from many years ago.
- Numerous readers in the comments got an email today to expect an adjustment for referral bonus credit from a long time ago which never posted “due to a technical error”. The points aren’t showing yet, but hopefully it’ll come soon. Multiple Reddit members report the same.
- An r/churning member (I can’t find the link right now) was told by Amex that they can cancel their MB Platinum and get a prorated adjustment. This person wasn’t even a churner at the time, and knew nothing about clawbacks, and they cancelled without realizing they’d get a claw back. After claw back, they called in numerous times with no success. Now, the points just reappeared on their own.
- On a similar vein, many people who returned items for their $50 Saks credit, are now seeing reversals on that credit. This is even for credits from many months back, and even on a closed Amex card. (If your card is closed, be sure to pay off your debt to Amex – they should send you a bill in the mail – else it’ll end up dinging your credit report.)
- Over the past couple of weeks, many have noted getting the $200 AT&T Amex Offer credit from a few months back – it finally came through now.
- Other miscellaneous points adjustments and credits are reported by readers in the comments here. These are for things like miscoded stores, missing Amex Offers, and other missing promotional points.
A common thread in most of these cases are that these are cases which people followed up with Amex – in some cases multiple times – but never got credit. So it may be that they went back and reviewed all their contact records and issued points in cases where they suspected legal liability.
I’m guessing there was just a system update or a system review which resulted in numerous adjustments, but it’s also possible it’s just random. Let us know if in the comments if you’ve gotten any adjustments yourself, positive or negative.
i got a check in the mail on Friday for a partial AF-refund on the EDP i closed at the beginning of the year. $32. i thought i closed it less than 2mo before it was gonna hit, but apparently not? The letter made it sound like “we changed our minds, you can have this after all”, but i never asked for it or petitioned in any way.
I still don’t see my hilton upgrade bonus from 2017.
I received a check from them for a refund of an annual fee that they say wasn’t credited correctly. No idea what they’re talking about. But I’ll take the $99.77
I am not sure where to post this question. Back in January of 2019 I opened up an American Express Personal Savings account because there was a bonus going on. I deposited $1,000 into it on January 14th. But I am realizing I don’t have any of the literature (and couldn’t find the old post here) about what I was supposed to do to trigger the bonus. And the bonus – whatever it was – has not posted.
How can I follow up on this bonus from Amex? Thanks for your help!
(on another note, the $150 bonus from Discover for a savings account – which I opened around the same time – posted almost immediately after I made the required deposit.)
Off hand, I don’t recall any offers for Amex savings accounts. You can try doing a site search or an internet search to see if it’s reported somewhere. You can also try calling Amex and asking if there’s an offer attached to your account. Best of luck.
Thanks – I just called them and they said “we don’t offer anything like that” – she didn’t look in my account specifically but she insisted there would not have been a bonus in January 2019. She said maybe what I was remember was the offer of 2.10% APY (which I am getting.)
Thanks for your help.
Not sure if this is the right thread for this, but I received an email today from Amex with a clawback of 25,000 MR from my account. Not exactly sure what triggered this, but I suspect the two self-referrals I made (even though those totaled 30,000 MR).
I noticed incorrect rewards points (x1 instead of x4 for restaurant purchases) on my previous statement, so I chatted with a rep online who opened an investigation for me. I got a call from a customer rep about a week later confirming that the case is open and will get back to me in about 10 business days. After about 2 weeks, she called me back saying the case was approved and that she will reward the XX amount of extra points.
But when I went through my statement again, I didn’t see this change reflected. I was able to find this adjustment by going to “Rewards” and then clicking on my “Points Balance” number – which shows all the points transactions. It shows as an “Adjustment,” as opposed to “Earned.”
Got an adjustment for an SPG referral bonus. Points haven’t hit my account yet, but I do remember following up with amex back in the spring and being told I couldn’t earn the points. I think the issue was I was unable to generate a referral link for a short time and my friend needed to apply asap
Now we wait for the news “Amex settles XYZ investigation into improper MR point actions” “The settlement sees Amex post points/credits for affected users while neither admitting nor denying wrongdoing” or something like that
Uh, that’s nice. But nothing for me and they are in no hurry to post my 100K marriott welcome bonus.
I could see Citi doing the exact opposite of this eventually, once it has caught up with modern technology, roughly 4.97 billion years from now, as the sun casts its final rays on the earth before burning out.
