[Expired] Office Depot/Max: Purchase $300 In Visa Gift Cards & Get $10 Off Instantly (7/29/18 – 8/4/18)

Deal has expired, view more Office Depot deals here.

Update 3: Seems the extra $10 is still coming off – you just have to enter your OD rewards number and that triggers an extra $10 off ($20 total discount). Works on any Visa gift card version, apparently. Some are even getting $20 off sporadically without a rewards number (perhaps this is specific to the Dining Everywhere cards), but it seems to be working pretty consistently with a rewards number.

Update 2: Whatever was causing this seems to have been fixed. Discount of $10 now applying.

Update: There seems to be a bug in their system double or triple crediting many readers. Some people are getting either $20 or $30 off a $400 Visa gift card purchase. I’m sure it’ll be fixed at some point.

The Offer

Direct link to offer (page 25)

The Fine Print

Our Verdict

About time this offer came back! Make sure to use a credit card that earns at a high rate on office supply stores. Not as good as previous $15 instant discounts they have had, but beggars can’t be choosers. We will repost when the deal is live.

Not only all stores (2 near me) here now limit 1 transaction per person, one store even requires the cashier to call in for credit authorization for any vgc purchase of >$200. So it took them over 20 minutes to do a $400 vgc transaction. They called in and denied both my chase ink card and amex cash, and finally allowed my citi mastercard. I can only guess it might have something to do with earning the 5% card(?) The manager insisted that was the new policy from corporate.

I used my rewards number but it didn’t take extra $10 off. Looks like they might have fixed it now

Are you sure? I tried that at 09:55 PM (just five minutes before they closed), and it worked. I gave them the reward number, and the total price was lowered to 379.99. I then used the coupon, and the price became 359.99. Maybe this just happened regionally?

Today, I purchased two 200 VGCs for 349.90. The customer service people first scanned the VGCs and then I selected how I want the recipet. I then told him my reward number, and he input the #. At this point, I remember that the total price went to 379.90. I give him my 10 dollar coupon, and he scanned it. The total price went to 349.90, and I paid for that.
I have already used the two VGCs to purchase an MO for 400.00, which was successful.

Coupon does not scan in my store today. I got the coupon several days ago when I promised my store’s manager I would do a survey to give him high marks because he very professionally handling a very rude customer who was in line after me.
The coupon came but in the T&Cs it said not applicable to GC purchase.

Though the cashier did not total the amount (i.e. the amount has not gone down to $379.90 but at $389.90) before scanning the coupon – he said once he total it, the system would not allow any coupon to enter. May be he is wrong. But in any case the coupon did not scan. He tried to manually enter it but the system still did not take it.
I did get 2 random $369.90 at a different store.

One store imposed a rule that all GC purchases must be in one single transaction. Manager claimed this was coming from Corporate – of course it was total BS as none other stores has such. My guess is this store noticed something different. The cashier told me people were coming to buy these GCs and the manager decided to impose this One Transaction for all GC purchase rule.

At another store the Everywhere completely ran out with plenty of more expensive VGCs left (that was an original OD, so no cabinet to raid as only OM has the GC cabinet while OD is only a stand). Also the manager on duty is not a friendly type, professional but not anywhere near friendly like those I met on previous visits. Cashier was new in training. So I decided to buy only one pair.

Have been buying 3 transactions each store so I am quite content even today’s “adventure” did not yield the total result as previously, despite they were the same stores.

Did they refuse to scan the coupon or the did scan but the system did not take the coupon? Based on my experience, the people working there stated that coupons CANNOT be used to purchase VGCs. But they also said that they can try. I let them try, and the system did take the coupon, as I saw that after scanning the coupon the price further decreased.

Did you read? Cashier scanned it, system did not take. He offered to manually enter it. System once again did not take it.

My apology. I mentioned coupon did not scan and cashier offered to manually put it in but the system still did not take it. May be it is due to he has not hit Total before scanning coupon. He said once Total key is hit, system would reject any coupon. May be he should hit Sub Total key because that seems to be the key that spit out extra discount (all the way down to $359.90 before I stopped a cashier to continue).
It has to be cashier error for hitting a certain key and the system glitch caused the amount kept going down.

Thanks for that. No problem. I have tried the coupon today (August 5th, 2018), and it did not work. The gentleman scanned it, but the price did not decrease.
I guess they might fixed the system. Based on their T&C, coupons cannot be used for purchasing a gift card. However, the coupon I used on August 4th, 2018, indeed brought the total price down.

“Based on their T&C, coupons cannot be used for purchasing a gift card.”

Looks to me like this coupon was intentionally released by Office Depot with advertising specifically stating it was for use on gift cards…? This wasn’t some exploit of a “$10 off $300 on anything” coupon that was supposed to be for ‘anything except gift cards’ but was miscoded to include them. Seems like they found some other way to screw up.

You may not realize what coupon we are talking about.
It is NOT a coupon being released – it is a coupon from doing a survey on your transaction. Anybody can get this kind of coupon ANYTIME after buying stuff from OD – all you needed is to do the survey with the code on your receipt.
The whole reason I did the survey was NOT for the coupon which I got on Monday but did not try to use it until reading Xinquing Wang’s posts.
The reason I did the survey was to give high mark to the store manager who very skillfully defused a nasty situation caused by an extreme rude customer queue behind me at the check out line when the register failed to read my card – turned out it wasn’t my card’s issue but the register somehow froze but the customer waiting was very upset and started to yell.
Store manager was nearby rearranging merchandises and he quickly came over and took me to another register where we finished 3 transactions without any hiccup – the irony was, when I was walking out, the rude customer was still trying to finish his whatever purchases with the cashier on another register, The middle register that had caused issue remained disable for another day until it was returned to normal function.
This is my closest and among my most friendly stores – I literally can do as many transactions as I feel comfortable at this store and the managers plus a good number of cashiers know me for years. So I want to do the survey to provide positive feedback. I know the store and the individual would see the survey and good or bad marks would go to the individual’s file if name is mentioned.
The $10/$50 coupon is from the Survey and specifically exclude many electronic items as well as Gift Cards and Stamps,

When people are running this deal multiple tie are they using the same rewards number or multiple different accounts (phone numbers)? Also since $10 comes off each card have you tried lower denominations ($25, 50, $100, etc) or is it linked to the $200 cards?

The promotion is $10 instant discount on $300 VGC purchase. So you want to buy multiple $25, $50, $100 and pay many more fees to add to the $300 threshold?

There is a glitch within the pos with this promotion. the $10 discount gets split between the 2 cards when cashier hits subtotal on the register. for some reason the cashier hit subtotal again and took another $10 off. confused he kept hitting subtotal until the final total was $353 instead of $403 for 2 $200 vgc’s.

OK. Here I have found another thing that might be interesting. I am not sure whether we have already known it, but I want to post it here anyway. When you purchase two 200 VGC, you will see a survey invitation at the bottom of the receipt. Finish the survey and you will get a coupon in your e-mail. This coupon is for 10 off when you purchase another two 200 VGC. I tried it today, and it worked.
After finishing the survey, you need to wait one night to get the coupon.

So here is how the glitch works. $10 off if u enter ur rewards before the gc is scanned. $20 off if u enter ur rewards after the gc is scanned. $30 off if u enter ur rewards after u picked ur receipt.

Agreed, this is the pattern I’m starting to see as well so I definitely suggest declining to provide your rewards # at first and then “changing your mind” and asking the cashier to add it just before you pay.

Yep. Can confirm this works… Did it 3x back to back. Just asked the guy I wanted to pay for 6 cards 2 at a time. When he asked for me rewards number I asked him to just give it to him later so that the promo could apply correctly. Worked like a charm. Right after you select how you want the receipt, give the phone number.

Avoid purchasing more than 3 sets of vgc at the same register connection. After 3 sets, the system automatically requests a store manager override code which could eventually raise red flags.

Wish it worked that way for me. I just got the $10 off, no more. I waited after picking the way I wanted the receipt before giving the cashier my rewards number.

It was an interesting glitch. Worked as you describe, although once gave $40 off at one register and then at the same register the next 2 trans each gave $30 off. Not sure what triggered the $40 off (she just typed in the rewards # after the receipt selection).
