Office Depot/Max Stores: Buy $300 In Visa Giftcards & Get $15 Instant Discount (3/16-3/22)

Update 3/15/25: This deal is back for 3/16 – 3/22. Reports aren’t always accurate (sometimes it only goes live mid-week), so keep that in mind. Stack with the Chase/BofA Offer for 5% back.

The Offer

Check your Office Depot/Max store for the following deal:

  • Buy $300 in Visa gift cards and get $15 discounted instantly at the register.

The Fine Print

  • In-store only

Our Verdict

Buy a $200 Visa gift card and a $100 Visa gift card or buy two $200 Visa gift cards. The best way to maximize is to buy three $200 Visa gift cards; you should get $30 off (or more) in a single checkout.

Fees are $5-$8 per card, but can be more-than-offset by this $15 instant discount. They usually offer a deal the week following Staples.

Use a card like the INK Cash/Plus which earns 5x at office supply stores. Also note, Dosh offers 2% back at Office Depot/Max and Rakuten in-store offers 5x/5%,  though the terms on these exclude gift cards from earning. Some people might have a Chase Offer/Bank Amerideals for Office Depot as well.

Tried to purchase a stack of cards on 3/20/2025 … had the dreaded activation problems again. 8 of the 9 cards I tried to purchase did not activate (strangely, one card did indeed activate). The register prompted with two cards that did not activate, and the paper receipt showed “Card will activate within 24 hours” for the other 6 cards. Of course, with previous experience with this receipt message, these “future activation” cards never do activate.

The refund ticket that spits out of the register when there are activation problems automatically refunded 8 of the 9 cards, including the ones denoted “will activate within 24 hours.”

So weird. I’ve done this plenty of times, and never had any trouble

Do your locations still keep Grocery/Style Everywhere which is $200 each? I only saw Fuel/Movie Everywhere here in Michigan. Visited 2 locations nearby.

Hey David, inventory is scarce in many locations now. YMMV…

I stopped by my local Office Depot yesterday and they only had $100 cards, which are not ideal. I asked the cashier about $200 ones and he asked a supervisor a few feet away and the supervisor answer was: “no, we keep all of those in the back during the duration of the promotion”. Cheap move.

That’s extremely frustrating. I would probably be contacting their corporate. Don’t think it would do much but still. Like it’s your job why so mad about selling them. Who knows I might pick up a pack of m&ms during checkout.

Same at my store. And I stupidly bought the Grocery Everywhere cards instead thinking I’d still be able to use them “everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted in the U.S.” on the back of the caad, and of course can’t use them for what I needed.

If one purchases 2 of the $500 gift cards, would it trigger the $300 threshold 3 times? Easier to deal with 2 gift cards rather than 9.

It would but Office Depot doesn’t sell $500 cards, at least not in any of the locations in my area.

Hey Doug, what is the fee on the $500 VGCs?

Doug

It was $7.95 (which would have been a total score). There were only 3 of them left, so tried to purchase all 3, and the CSR could not activate them. Must have been ancient cards…. No problem with activating $200 cards, however.

I have not seen the $500 VGC for a long time. Definitely ancient relics from the past.

This guy–

75 k in gift cards from Depot/Max/Staples a year is larger than most of the craziest enthusiasts even do in volume a year…”

…this guy would probably have a heart attack on the spot if he saw my annual spend if he thinks 75k is an outlier.

Confirming that Visa GC’s have the promotion now. I tried to purchase Mastercard at first but the discount didn’t apply and the cashier said that someone came in earlier and bought Visa. I switched and received the discounts.
