Deal has ended, view more Office Depot/Max deals by clicking here.
Update: Many in the comments are getting this deal to work, but it seems it’s not for everyone. I’ve added an image above now as well. Also updated to note that this deal goes on through December 24.
The Offer
Check your local Office Depot/Max store to see if they have the following deal:
- Buy $300 in Visa gift cards and get $15 discounted instantly at the register.
The Fine Print
- This is presumably valid 12/13/20 through
12/19/2012/24/20 - Limit 1 per customer
- Discount applied at register
Our Verdict
Reader Steven tested buying $300 in Visa gift cards at his local Office Depot/Max and the $15 came off automatically; there was no sign in the store, it just came off automatically at register. I assume it’s a nationwide deal, possibly not advertised anywhere or possibly some stores do advertise it.
Its been a month since ending. I ready for the next round of these.
Also still waiting impatiently. Been almost two months now, and my stock is running low
Be careful with these cards. I did this deal on 11/17/20, and on 12/30/20 I saw a fradulent charge for $299.75. I never used the card anywhere. Either GiftCardMall is having another data breach or someone at Office Depot is stealing credit card numbers. I am waiting for the holidays to end to dispute the charge.
I had no problems with this at my local store. I asked them employees before running the cards through the scanner, and they of course had no idea what I was talking about.
But just as miafll below explained, the discount appeared automatically as soon as I picked the print receipt option on the credit card terminal. If I hadn’t read miafll’s posts, I probably would have been concerned when it showed the full price on the screen until then. Thanks, miafll!
HaveMiles it’s been like that & a given; new folks who r not familiar would find the data helpful; as previously stated, not sure why (glitches or whatever, even a spvr mentioned that disc sb applied) couple of stores in my local area showed $0 disc, so not wasting time to revisit… simply go to stores where disc is given
I am more of a Staples guy; I don’t go much to Office Max as the only store in town is out of my way on the other end of town. And in the past my purchases there have exclusively been Amazon gift cards where no discount was involved.
Knowledge and patience. So useful. 🙂
12/21/20 Got this deal last week, no issues. Sign was up in store (central FL). Payment made by CC.
Basically useless w/o WMNM
Not everyone interested in buying these uses them for MS purposes. The way I value Chase points, it’s like getting an extra 5-7% off everything I normally purchase (over what I would be purchasing with).
Are people able to login to Amex BB account? It seems they are experiencing technical difficulties. Can someone please confirm? I hope they are not shutting down my account. Thank you. Dec 21, 2020 about 9.25am EDT.
I was able to login at 10.40am EDT. Thank God. No shutdown of the account. Still can’t Bill Pay to newly added Payees. Thanks.
My experience from last Saturday: Tried to get 2 sets of vgc like usual (this store used to allow 2 sets per day) but was denied. The new store manager told me that he talked to the regional manager the day before and was told each person now can only buy 1 gift card (any type of gift card) per day due to security concerns. At first i thought he meant 1 set, but he said “no, 1 card only. You have to come tomorrow to buy the second card”. Of course i couldn’t believe him as the maximum for each vgc is $200. It doesn’t make sense why would the Corporate have this new policy while encouraging people to buy $300 (promotion) so i tried to call their corporate, but of course i couldn’t get anyone in weekend other than the general customer service rep who could only take my name and phone number. This is in west Tennessee. I don’t know if it’s regional change or something come from Corporate.
I visited an office depot in Lewisville, TX, not my regular store, first time there. I walked up with a handful, like to play dumb, and see if I get the right cashier. She told me that they only accept cash for gift cards. She told me it was a new corporate policy in the last month. I’ve bought these several times over the last couple weeks, so not sure what policy she is referring to. Figured I just got a sour cashier. Luckily that isn’t my regular store.
That store has been cash only since I’ve tried a few years back. Some stores have made up policies on this.
Any recent experiences in South Florida? Is this now regionally reliable, or does it really vary from store to store in the same town?
The discount is nation-wide. The key is whether a store is cash only, one transaction only, or multiple transactions allowed. Here in Broward county you have all 3 types. Needless to say, you only go to those allow multiple transactions. On top of that some stores even allow multiples, they insist to enter telephone number – which also mean on the 4th transaction a manager override is prompted by the POS – there is no get around it. Some store managers dont mind while some balk, naturally.
BTW discount does not come off automatically unlike Staples. You have to do Print Receipt on the pad, then the discount would be applied on the next screen, before you make the payment. It always behaves this way at all OD stores I have visited. I never see discount comes off automatically. Most cashiers know that too.
When people claimed the discount came off automatically I strongly suspect it was due to the cashier knew s/he had to do print receipt – it does not matter you do it on the pad or s/he does it on the cashier end, my experiences have been, discount only comes off AFTER that print receipt option is activated.
miafll maybe nationwide but not sure why some stores in the same area did NOT show any discount when pymt is ready… those stores didn’t have the promo sign displayed on top of the GCs rack; wonder if certain store(s) can choose to opt out; after attempting twice with $0 discount & cancelled when the promo started last week, skipped those stores entirely
My post says it very clearly, you NEED to see the screen where it offers HOW you want to have the receipt BEFORE making payment. That screen can only be initiated by the cashier, NOT auto-pop up. Then you press that PRINT RECEIPT choice, you now RETURN to the payment screen with the discount, showing the net amount versus the Previous Payment screen with full price.
I am almost 100% certain that those who have the discount coming off automatically, it was because their cashiers did the Print Receipt option on their end by pressing some keys. I have seen that before in very few occasions when the cashiers knew exactly what it took to get the discount off. Mot of the time though, YOU are the one to tell the cashier to bring up the Print Receipt screen. Once the Print Receipt is activated, the POS returned to the payment screen showing the Net Amount.
Go back to your store and do the exact steps I now described in more details and see what happens.
No, they do NOT opt out the discount which IS programmed in the system but it needs to be triggered with certain steps. I only know the ONLY WAY to trigger it, IS TO USE PRINT SCREEN FUNCTION.
lol, i know the steps very well & been at OD/OM for GCs purch for yrs; any rate, thought to let folks know that some stores for unknown reason did not offer the discount
did see some ppl on this thread did previously post or see no discount at certain stores in the same area
They are really pushing these Metabank VGC lately …
