Our Verdict
Either purchase two $200 cards or one $200 and one $100. The variable load $20-$500 cards are cash only so won’t work. Normally you can do this deal multiple times in different transactions but YMMV based on cashier.
Nice to see this OM/OD deal return. $10 doesn’t completely wipe out the purchase fees, but it comes close. Staples is also offering fee-free Visa gift cards this week. Time to pull out those INK cards or another card that earns bonus points at office supply stores.
Hat tip to reader Larry
Has anyone had any surprise discounts, like in days of yore?
The effing fees are 6.95 for $200. You still end up paying $4 for $400.
If you have an INK card that’s 2000 points. That’s worth a lot more than $4.
Anybody know if the GE cards work with this deal?
Yes
That was the question I had yesterday while at OD. Noticed a Grocery card that I hadn’t seen before.
Probably not a new data point, but: My OD let me buy 4x $200 VGC in one transaction, but only took off the $10 once. I was hoping it would happen twice automatically despite the small print.
yeah its been like that for years. thats why everyone does separate transactions when possible
I was able to buy the variable loads using a cc. In fact, when the store manager saw me trying to buy 3 $100 cards(no $200 cards available) he recommended the variable loads because of lower fees. He said I just couldn’t buy the variable cards that were specialized for restaurants.
The OD I went to yesterday and today didn’t have signage on the racks but I proceeded to buy 2 GEs and discount posted on first transaction so I asked if I can buy 2 more sets and got approval.
Didn’t work at my OD store. Working with store tech now to resolve as the marketing sign was clearly displayed. Hoping for a favorable outcome.
I just came back from an office depot, they removed the large GC card display kiosk. The store i went to no longer even carried VISA gcs, that store said they were completely out of that business now. I tried to go to a second store but it was closed already. I can see through the glass windows that the gc kiosk rack has been removed from there too but had one or two visa cards dangling by the cashiers. When did this happen…everything was still normal during the last OD gc sale a few months ago…
Yikes, this is a disturbing possibility if it becomes a trend… What area of the country are you in?
Went to 6 different Office Depots today, appears only that one store is no longer carrying variables. Store manager said too much fraud, they gave up on variables and only doing small fixed up to $50. However all stores I went to no longer has the card stand where extras were stored inside. They don’t carry extras anymore so whatever you see on the rack is what you get.
I bought the 20-500 visa gift cards at grocery stores and they were not cash only (used a credit card)… so I’m not sure if OD Carrie’s some particularly different ones but that might be the best redemption option of all.
Office supplies stores like Staples and OD/OM do NOT carry visa/mastercard GCs with amounts over $200, both fixed and variable.
Just like you said, a good week for office supply purchases of VISA gift cards. A friendly reminder to examine all packaging carefully and to definitely take a quick look at the authenticity of the barcode inside the package.
how to check the barcode and why is this done? fraud? thanks
Scammers replace the barcodes and drain the cards before you know.
