Our Verdict
Shame about the hard pull, but if you don’t care about that then this is a really good bonus and easy to meet the requirements for. We will add this to our list of the best checking promotions.

@Adam K & Others: P2 and P1 (myself) closed our accounts today over the phone.
Some notes while it’s fresh in my mind:
The online chat person will tell you it has to be closed in branch. It does not; over the phone is fine. Press #8 and then #2 to get to a person.
I had $300 in there from July 24 2024 – Jan 24 2024. On the morning on Jan 24th I pushed from Telhio to CapOne 360 checking (I had set this external account up when I opened the account). I noticed Saturday morning the Telhio checking was at $0.00 and CapOne showed the $300 had arrived, so I closed Sat the 25th.
They run their $6 per month fee on the last day of the month. So if you move your money out and want to close, make sure that doesn’t overlap the last business day of the month else you’ll get hit with a $6 fee. It also sounds like this account one cannot just 0 out and walk away – they have a 12 month “dormant fee” that I didn’t want to test if they actually do this.
When you close over the phone, they will email you a docusign that asks questions almost like a credit check (vehicles & addresses you’re associated with). All 3 bureaus + Chexsystems for us are frozen and did not need to be thawed.
Lastly, their mailing the $5 check.
Hope this helps someone. About 45 minutes of work total + the loss of $600 ($300 x 2) for $500 total. Not bad.
Closing the accounts – what firing order is everyone doing?
P1 + P2 both got their bonuses – now at the 6 month mark. Ready to close.
We each have the required $5 in their CU share account, and each of us has $300 to avoid the monthly fee.
Do I zero out the account and then close? I’m worried about an immediate $6 charge.
It’s cold here in Ohio and too lazy to drive over to the branch.
I just called and was told by a rep that to close both my checking and savings would require a visit to the branch. He was able to send me a DocuSign form to consolidate and close my checking account. Frustrating. I guess I will close my entire account the next time I am near a branch.
P2 is going to be frustrated to have to deal with.
DP
7/24: applied online with code “CHECK250”. Address in SWO. Attempted funding with Discover debit. App went pending with follow up email to choose a different funding method (Discover not accepted apparently).
7/25: No formal email re: accounting approval, but received a Docusign email that included an account number, so approved. Yay!
7/27: enrolled in eStatements.
8/7 – 8/8: 5x $1 Apple Cash debit loads
10/28: $250 “CHECK250 Promotion Granted”, which is 95 days from account opening and contrary to terms which said 90 days.
Applied and accepted as a resident of southwest Ohio. Maximum of $2,500 per account and total of $5,000 is permitted on Mastercards (debit or credit). I was immediately charged $2,500 for the Checking, and $2,500 for the savings on my C1 Savor card upon approval without issue or inquiry.
@cb if you want then you can refer me. I already opened the account but we may still get our $100’s. It’s worth a try.. anyone else can refer me if they message faster.
Only differences are that the code is “CHECK250“, and that the account must be opened by 9/30/2024 (a month or so later than the “fair250” code)
Anyone know if you can churn this one? I closed my account last October. The T&C say, “Offer for new Telhio Checking Account Customers only. Limit one offer per person” so I’m guessing not.
I closed my previous account in Jan 2024. Opened it in June of 2023 so kept it open for 6+ months. Opened again with a different promo code and different email on 04/09/24 exactly 3 months after previous close. Surprisingly received the bonus on 7/12/24. Honesty wasn’t expecting the bonus to post but figured with easy requirements I would give it another shot.
I’m not seeing anything about a bonus at the “Direct Offer Link”…
Fixed, thanks
Got a auto call from Telhio, a fraud transaction on the debit card was blocked by them. The debit card is not secure.
DP:
Opened my account with promo code for $200.
Referred my P2 through refer live after a week. My P2 signed up through my referral link and used the promo code as well. Surprisingly it staked, After completing the requirements, We received 3*50$ gift card. Not sure why we got extra $50.
$200 bonus posted last week for both of us.
Easy $550. Thank you DoC!!
What’s strange is the wording from the referral page; sounds as if it should be $100, not $50?
“$100 For You, $100 For Them – Telhio Credit Union Checking AccountOnce your friend or family member registers, opens a new checking account AND completes the following requirements within 60 days after account opening, you will BOTH receive a $100 Visa® Reward Card!
Your friend can earn a $100 Visa Reward Card!
Please allow up to 4-6 weeks, after completing all requirements of this offer, for delivery of your Reward Card.”
I saw this post and was able to replicate your success. P1 got 250 bonus. Referred P2, received 3*$50 gift card. Then P2 250 bonus posted. TY.
I’m the opposite of you guys – I only got a single $50 gift card.
Oh well onto the next one..
