PenFed announced that they would stop accepting applications for the PenFed Pathfinder American Express Rewards card in late 2019. It was then announced that the card would be getting a refresh and running on the Visa payment network and would open to applications in early 2020, that was then delayed.
The new Visa card has now launched and is accepting applications and it looks to be a good card.

Card Basics
Let’s take a look at the card basics:
- Sign up bonus of 50,000 points after $3,000 in spend within the first 90 days
- $95 annual fee, waived for honors members
- $100 credit towards either TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. This applies once every five years
- $100 airline fee credit
- Card earns at the following rates:
- 4x points on all travel purchases for PenFed Honors Advantage Members (to be eligible for this you must be a military member or holder of PenFed’s Access America checking account)
- 3x Points on on all travel purchases for regular members
- 1.5x Rewards on everything else
- Priority Pass Select Membership (you pay $32 per visit)
We know what triggered the airline fee credit in the past, but that might have changed with the switch to Visa. The card looks to be basically identical to before but with a much higher sign up bonus and the addition of the annual fee. Before the card was an easy one to keep long term, that’s no longer the case unless you have honors membership with PenFed.
Applying For Card
To apply for this card, you must be a member of PenFed. The easiest way to qualify is to be a previous or existing member of the military. You can also join National Military Family Association ($17) or Voices For Troops ($17). More information about becoming a member of PenFed can be found here. They will also sometimes request pay stubs to verify your income.
Referral Bonus
You can get an additional $50 on top of the 50,000 points by using a referral link. You can find and share links here.
How Much Are Points Worth?
Some sample redemptions:
- $50 Prepaid Visa card = 5,880 points
- $25 Southwest gift card = 2,940 points
- $100 Delta gift card = 11,760 points
- $10 Amazon gift card = 1,170 points
Basically 50,000 points = $425.
Honors Membership Requirements
To be an honors member (no annual fee and higher earning rate on travel) you either need to be member of the military or Access America account holder
Our Verdict
Overall the card is worth getting for the sign up bonus. The card is worth keeping long term if your an honors member as you get the annual fee waived and the $100 airline credit to use, otherwise I don’t think it makes sense to keep as you need to pay the annual fee and this wipes out the airline credit. We will add this to our list of the best credit card bonuses.
Denied for p2 750credit score with both checking and savings penfed accounts.
Nb : I had to open cfpb for savings bonus never given, same for checking cfpb opened 4 months after bonus supposed to get, they gave 3 different versions on the phone and cfpb answer. So after pressured phone calls, they paid the checking bonus 1 week ago (checking account opened in January)
Very bad experience for us. We will close all accounts Monday.
However 400$ looks a pretty nice bonus if you can remove the AF.
Has anyone tried buying miles? Specifically Air Alaska miles?

Logged in online to apply, instant approval. Card number showed up online right away.
Got Denied today 9/10 not sure of the reason, have a checking account with them and no cards. very few cards last few years and excellent score.
Got denied for this today 9/6/24. I am not a churner, with only 3 current cards (one of which is PenFed Platinum Rewards at 12.5k limit. I have a 800+ credit score across all bureaus so I was a bit floored by this denial. Called PenFed customer service, but they dont have a reconsideration process and didnt get anywhere with that. Only thing I can guess is that they dont want to extend additional credit to someone who already as a card?? No clue, but apply with caution.
How soon do the points post after meeting spending? I have met the spending, but there is a return for a small amount that will bring it back below the spending requirement (about $30 below.)
One day.
Does anyone know how timing works with regards to signing up for both this card + the checking account to waive the annual fee? Do I need to sign up for the checking acct a certain number of days in advance, or would same day be fine, or even after to make sure I’m actually approved? (Can’t imagine I wouldn’t be but that’d be annoying on the off chance)
To answer part of my own question, digging around in the T&C reveals that you definitely need the checking acct before, but still not sure how much before.
Also, @WilliamCharles the link for info on becoming a member is dead, here’s what might be the new link: https://www.penfed.org/credit-cards/honors-advantage-points
Edit: Ok, I don’t know how @ s work on here, hopefully someone sees that eventually haha
I opened the checking account a day before application and approval.
Thanks, Kyle!
I was told atleast 2 statements which shows you are eligible honors member. or else you will be charged fees.
I was approved and I definitely don’t qualify and never signed up for any of the two organizations. Did my credit check online and got an approval email a few days later.
Any data points on having multiples of this card?
Southwest early bird fees ($50) and $11.20 taxes for companion passes counted as airline credit, posted to account within 5 days.
