My Pet Peeve about Buying Gift Cards on Exchanges, and Why Everyone Should be Using Giftcardzen

Whenever anything complains about buying gift cards from second-hand gift card exchanges, the first thing that comes to mind is always the bad, fraudulent cards. Card didn’t work, hard time getting refund, etc. I’m not the biggest gift card buyer, but luckily most of my cards have been good, and when it wasn’t I’ve been able to get a refund with relative ease.

Here’s my issue with buying from gift card exchanges. Virtually any time I’m buying a gift card, I need it for immediate use. Not next business day, not tomorrow, not even in an hour. I need it now.

Some exchanges are better than others about doing instant delivery, you can check out this chart for some interesting data. The bottom line is that it varies a lot by who you are. If you have a track record of buying daily, the exchanges are more likely to send it your way without any manual review. A sporadic purchaser is more likely to need manual review on large purchases.

Usually, Raise is considered to be the best about sending out gift card instantly (I think?), but even with Raise – a merchant I’ve made tens of thousands in purchases over the years – I’ve had times where manual review was required and it took a few hours or overnight. Usually it’s when there are back-to-back large orders or when using an IP address other than my own.

Here’s where Giftcardzen wipes the floor with all the other exchanges: Giftcardzen has an awesome feature where you can cancel a gift card purchase anytime until you open itSo not only can you still cancel after purchase until delivery, you can even cancel after getting the email stating the gift cards are ready.

As an example, just now I purchased a small Target gift card from Giftcardzen. The order came instantly to my email, but the card number is not shown in the email. Instead, there’s a link in the email which is used to download the codes. At that link, it gives the option of cancelling the purchase for a full refund.

It’s totally understandable why the exchanges can’t take returns after you’ve already view the gift card for fraud prevention. But all exchanges should allow for cancelling while the order is still pending as this removes any doubts about whether the cards will come instantly or in time for your purchase. This is in the best interest of the buyer and in the best interest of the exchanges since it’ll spur additional sales.

Another option (not as good) would be to give a time estimate during the purchase. For example, as the website spins it could shoot out a message, “this purchase needs manual review which may take a few hours, do you still want to make the purchase?” At least we can be informed consumers under such a system. The current guessing game isn’t fun.

Has anyone consistently sell GCs on Raise.com? It seems that you’re better off just selling it to CardCash, Cardpool or GCZ, etc. The fee charged by Raise makes the listing noncompetitive.

Great to hear about another option in this space – for buying giftcards when we need them, removing the uncertainty of receipt, etc.. Thanks for the report; will add it to the arsenal.

On the other end, sellers, — have a hunch I’m among those who’d like to ramp up gc re-selling…. and am presently less than happy with the outlets I’ve tried. Alas, the one place where many of us had hopes — tpm — isn’t a very user-friendly space… Wish there was a forum somewhere to air complaints and concerns, to share ideas…. tpm runs their operation like it’s a one-way only. as in, you’re lucky to be selling here, so abide by our rules, keep your mouths shut, etc., etc. (Nothing like getting slammed in a generic message about using too much tape on mailed in cards – never mind that their own guidance had emphasized being sure to securely tape them down…. (for mailing machines whatevef — trivia — yet irritating as anything to get blasted like sellers are “children.)

…. yes, TPM is great place to do business — WHEN it works, when they’re not on vacation, when they bother to replenish …. But the most serious problem there — getting paid. (expect weeks of delays….
such comedy in the changing guidance on payment forms…. Nothing like the adventure of waiting for mailed checks — worth thousands — via usps without tracking info! For some reason, TPM refused to do ach transfers…)

Alas, feedback there not welcome. And so I (“we”) hazard some input into the air … here. Questions to tpm get short shrift answers. I’m all for being “business-like.” But tpm drops it to a bare minimum…. and if you’re caught saying anything sour outside the forum, (or sending an email to one of their favored bloggers) or revealing pricing, you risk having your access there cut-off…. Nasty… Thus I’m hoping for alternative

If everything you wrote is true aren’t you worried you will get banned for your rant?

I have bought a LOT of gift cards from GCZ over the past few years. Most recently, I had a problem with one of them and GCZ was prompt in refunding the money. A year or two ago, I had a problem with a batch of Dollar General cards and, again, they were great to deal with.

I wish Target still allowed combining of giftcard balances. I used to buy a lot of second hand gift cards from Giftcardzen and then combine them to the primary gift card I purchased at retail. At least this way, you can empty the balance of the second hand gift card.

You can still combine them in-store, manually, through a store manager.

You can buy something immediately and then return it later to get a new gift card number.

GCZen banned me and they say there is nothing they can do about it; it’s a 3rd party anti fraud issue. I attempted to buy $500 in GCs once and after that, banned.

I couldn’t even get the first ever purchase in at giftcardzen or abcgiftcards/clones. De facto perma-ban out of the gate, based on the same mythical 3rd party fraud prevention data. I suspect it might be from “Early Warning”, the same entity used by Fidelit… in approving/rejecting EFT/ACH account setups, the same idiots based out of AZ who can’t even spell my name right in the resulting email after I called in to request a copy of their file on me.

Nice! Do purchases post as an Office Product sale as with PPDG?

not reasonable for sellers IMO as exchanges need to pay sellers immediately and this might delay payments

As a seller I wouldn’t mind a 24 hour grace period before payment if it brings more buying activity to the exchange.

only if its 24 hour period and not a blanket thing

Does Giftcardzen purchases earn 5x with Ink?
