Radio Shack
Radio Shack filed for bankruptcy on February 5 2015. Gift cards can be usually be used for 30 days after filing. Bloomberg is reporting that this is the last week to be able to use Radio Shack gift cards.
From what I’ve read it sounds that March 5 is the last day to use them, and on March 6 they’ll all be worthless. Some $44 million worth of Radio Shack gift cards remain unused, so make sure yours isn’t one of them. (source)
If you can’t get into a Radio Shack store, one easy idea is to use them up by making an online purchase.
Deb Shops
Deb Shops also filed for bankruptcy and they’ll be accepting their gift cards until March 8. If you have any gift cards be sure to use them up.
Deb Shops does not seem to be available for use online any more, so you’d have to go in-store to use up the gift card.
If you have one of the older blue “Cool Gift Cards”, you can call and check your balance, or ask a cashier in Radio Shack. You may need to be persistent to use it; I “have” $12 on one, but when a purchase was attempted, their POS said the card was already expired. I called the customer service number, and got some runaround that I should’ve told the cashier to call in for a manual approval. I haven’t made it back out to a Radio Shack, and am not sure it’s worth another attempt to claim $12 off of the card.
It’s a shame, Radio Shack… I’ll miss you.
Maybe it’s possible to find something online for $12. Otherwise, yeah, it may not be worth the hassle.
