Found an offer yesterday (4/6/20) to upgrade my Surpass to the Aspire after logging in and checking the Amex Offers section. The offer included a 150k bonus for $4k spend in 3 months.
I did not receive the points. CSR said I am not targeted though I have snapshot showing the offer.
Have you got the points? I finished spending for 3 days, still nothing.
I wish one day they will give card holders free anniversary night after annual fee but without additional spending requirement 🙂
i *just* downgraded my Aspire to vanilla Honors (which it had been prior to last year’s upgrade). Probably greedy of me to upgrade again so soon (though, i’ve done it before…)
exactly. i’ve already got >1M hhonors points, so i can afford to not be greedy.
also: i’d rather upgrade my BCE to BCP (i downgraded my BCP last fall) for a bonus. figure i’ll save my bullets for that one
I downgraded and immediately upgraded via offer, and they did not award me the points. Best not to be greedy. If you can wait and ensure you’ll get the points when you upgrade.
I upgraded to Ascend earlier this year and paid the prorated $95 annual fee. Recently, I received an offer to upgrade to Aspire. But with the $450 annual fee it really does not make sense to upgrade from Ascend to Aspire unless one wants to risk the ire of Amex by quickly redeeming the points and then closing the card account before the annual fee applies???
I was able to upgrade both my free cards (one was always a free card, the other was an ascend that I had downgraded previously) and got 2 x 150,000. However, the AMEX website would not let my wife upgrade either of her free cards. It just says “error” every-time she clicks upgrade. I’ve spoken to AMEX and they simply state that she was not “targeted” (don’t worry – I didn’t say I found the link on a website). Frustrating but I’ll take the 300,000 points I got and try not to think of the the additional 300,000 we could have potentially gotten.
My guess is that the free account was opened too recently and the downgrade is less than a year ago, but mine are both only a few months older and it worked for me. It’s frustrating but at least we got my cards upgraded.
Can I use old card to meet spending amount after upgrade? Or I have to wait to new card come

My points posted, but I also smell a RAT. I’ve been getting pop-up on cards, did BB+ anyway, for the 20k referral and to see if 10k would post despite popup… referral posted but not the bonus.
the SUB pts won’t likely post; that’s why the pop-up msg was there for, lol
I have the ascend currently, not the aspire. Can i upgrade to the Aspire, get the bonus and then in the future cancel the card, get it again and get the bonus? I know it has been said you can have had the aspire before, and still get the upgrade bonus – i guess I am asking the question in the reverse order
My understanding is if you’ve never held the Aspire card and you upgrade another card to it, you’ve locked yourself out of getting a bonus in the future due to the once in a life time rule. So the correct order should be to obtain each tier’s SUB directly first. Then downgrade so you can be target for an upgrade when a promotion hits

true, Amex is happy if the 1st prorated annual fee is paid, wait for 12 months before downgrading or closing
i just used the public to upgrade the no annual fee card to ascend and got 150k, can i now upgrade to aspire to get another 150k before the expire date ? thx.
did you wait till the first 150k bonus to post before upgrading the 2nd time? Mine hasn’t posted and am tempted to do that.
